Basic 911 - 991.2 question - apologies.
Discussion
Hi - apologies if this issue has been dealt with ad-nauseam.
I am weighing up between a basic Carrera 991.2 and an ‘S’. I want the car as an all-around daily car and won’t be doing track days and so - on. I have a long drive down through France fairly frequently.
I’ve seen a fair bit of stuff that suggests that for ordinary roads / daily stuff without endangering your licence every 5 minutes - the base car is great and is more a useable proposition.
Be very grateful for any thoughts.
Cheers. Dave.

Thanks both very much for quick replies. I did see a Harry Metcalfe video on the S - didn’t know there was one on the base car - will check it out.
The video is on the S, but he surmises that the base may be one to go for. It’s the one I have and I’ve had to use it this week as the wing mirror has been taken off my 435d. I can confirm that it’s quite traction limited in the wet, so wouldn’t drive any better with more power. In the summer the grip is immense and it could handle more power. I enjoy it, so I hope that helps.
Hi, I have a 991.2 Carrera pdk.
Don't worry about a lack of power, the car is fast enough and your license will most certainly be at risk.
Re one of the previous comments, the Carrera S has a locking differential as standard and which wasn't available on the "basic" car. Also, PASM sport suspension was an option on the S but not on the base car.
If those things are important to you, you may want an S but not on power grounds. The T has both of those coupled with the 370 engine and may be the best buy, especially as a manual, in that case.
My car has 20"wheels, a glass roof which I like having had a 996 Targa, Sport Chrono and a sports exhaust. I don't use Sport Chrono but like the appearance of the sports exhaust which is different to previous and current 991's.
Porsche has a tendency to bring out the higher model first (as with the 992) when the base car is perfectly good in its own right, and as I have been told in the past, unless you can make a car go as quickly as it will (and 99.9% of us won't be able to) why would you want it to be quicker?
Great car.

The T is a great package and reminiscent of the 997 Carreras in many ways.Don't worry about a lack of power, the car is fast enough and your license will most certainly be at risk.

Rare and future classic too.

Agree with you that the vanilla Carrera is a great proposition I don't think the above logic holds true. Average drivers are faster in faster cars than they are in slower cars. That best drivers are faster in a slower car than the more average driver in the faster one would only matter in racingAlthough I can't comment on other models, I find the base 991.2 Carrera to be more than fast enough. I have the PDK without Chrono, it's still a mid-4 second car to 60mph which I have never found wanting. When I was looking at cars, I did the research and the advice was always less is more with 911s and most of the OPCs I spoke with echoed this advice.
As someone else said, in wet weather it's a real handful (although summer tyres might not be helping), but in all other aspects it is surely all the car you need. Aside from the 10mm higher ride height, it looks just like an S when you have the sports exhaust fitted (which most do).
I have no desire to upgrade to the higher models, I really don't see how I would make use of the extra power.

I went for a basic Carrera, complete with 19 inch alloys, but specced up with 18 ways, PSE and LED lights and have no regrets. The ride is brilliant, the seats are the most comfortable I’ve had and the lights are stunning. In modern Britain, it’s more than quick enough, it’s narrower body is more suited to towns and parking spaces. Less is definitely more in this case. Carrera T is a nice compromise but anything loaded with the options makes it meaningless.
The car I liked least in the 991.2 range was the S. found it had turbo lag and didn’t enjoy it.
IMO the best was the GTS but the base car is great to drive and the engine is really good and not turbo like.
If budget can stretch I’d seriously look at the 991.2GTS if not then I’d look at a T which seems to be VERY cheap right now with prices at mid-late £70’s and give you that little bit of special Porsche sauce at a great price.
