Car has just failed the warranty inspection and needs new discs as there are 'cracks above 5mm and blocked vents'.

Just taken it back and had a look and slightly bemused WRT cracking, but happy to be educated? Are the rear faces more likely to be any worse?

Car has done about a 6 track days with me and I usually do 12 lap sessions and a full lap to cool down.

IMHO twelve laps , assuming 90 secs laps, is too many. Four to six would be my recommendation.

Can’t see anything wrong with those disc’s apart from brake dust blocking holes. Clean them out and good to go

Even on bigger circuits 10-12 laps should be fine with a cool down lap

New Porsches must be a tad soft. I can stay out on circuit for over 30mins in the old 996 GT3 biggrin

It is an unfortunate side effect of the 111p check that they will condemn the disks for cracks which most independents would pass. You could drive them yet for many more track days.

In my experience the OPC would give an advisory but still pass the car for warranty renewal as the brakes aren’t covered by the warranty anyway.
I’ve taken cars with delaminating PCCBs before and it’s been ok for renewal. Looks like you’ve got a jobsworth OPC centre. Ideally one should show something like that to them first before the check to confirm they will still pass it. That way you chose your opc before the test.

Edited to add: in my experience OPCs have been more bothered about the discs having a Porsche 996.xxx / 997.xxx or 991.xxx part number on them than the state of the actual discs. You should impress upon them that this is a 111 point check for warranty renewal and not resale (for which the discs might fail the Porsche standard). For warranty renewal those discs have zero additional liability for Porsche.

This makes sense - surely the OPC can honour the warranty as the discs wouldn’t be covered. It may be worth escalating your plight to the Service Manager as I wouldn’t accept what they are saying

They look as good as new. Not bad for standard brakes.

They are nothing to worry about and I would politely ask for a second opinion from someone a bit more knowledgeable at the OPC so you can pass your warranty check. Last time I spoke to a technician , they worked to a 5mm rule for the cracks that propagate from the drilled holes. They do not look anywhere near 5mm.

These were mine after same amount of trackdays but I didn't need anyone to tell me to change them laugh

Having non Porsche wiper blades would be a fail for renewal, so to continue that logic the brakes would also be a fail.

There does certainly seem to be a significant degree of variation from one opc to another on passing warranty inspections and on even basic fault diagnosis and rectification. I think if you took the same car with known issues to 4 centers you’d get different results .

You need to remember things rarely make any sense when it comes to Porsche warranty renewals...

I can hardly see any cracks let alone the over 5mm ones.

Sounds like OPC looking for a brake job sale to me.

My GT4 failed warranty check on the same basis, though cracks were worse than it looks like in your pics. My indy said they wouldn't replace at that point, but they would recommending changing once the pads were done (about 50% worn). I bit the bullet and changed to get the warranty - has probably worked OK for me as I've subsequently had two warranty claims.

Agree with others that it may be worth you getting another opinion (either same or different OPC), especially if you clean the cooling holes out first.

Thanks for your replies - mostly as I hoped/expected.

If those discs needed changing already with my modest track ability, then I would have had concerns about the product.

As it stands I am less impressed with the warranty criteria as it needed two new rears - they could only get N1, but my front axle still had N0 so another unexpected expense. But it is what it is.

Currently deciding whether to keep hold of it or switch as I've had it just over two years and be good to experience something different. If I keep it I will talk to my OPC again.

I'm with Cunno on this.

Does the OPC think he has you by the short and curlies ?

Nothing wrong with them on these faces. Not sure what the backsides look like it can’t imagine they’d be any worse.

Go to a different OPC.

Mine look much worse than that and my OPC said they’d pass it, knowing that'd I’ll be replacing them soon anyway.

They look fine to me too...

mind you I nearly had a heart attack when mine went in for its warranty renewal;
F&R PCCB discs 'subject to heat' recommend replacing
Pads 9mm all round - subject to heat - suggest replacing
cost for both - £21K !!

interesting point is that I've actually only done one (lazy) trackday this year, rather than the 6/7

Also looking at last years report, the pads were all at 8mm, and no replacement recommendation.

I also had the F&R N1 / N0 issue.
Luckily I have a good relationship with he OPC, and they let this one slide... smile

Not sure why they didn't show any flexibility WRT the discs and tyres - bit short-term in their thinking.

The car does actually need two new rears to pass the MOT, but I'll get that (and the warrantly renewal) done elsewhere.

Car will then be ready for a few more track days next year smile

Yep - exactly. I said this to my OPC, and they'd pass the car knowing that I'd be replace those consumables in short order anyway, as use the car on track.
As it is, I haven't bothered with extended warranty, at this stage anyway.

Are the discs covered for any wear or tear, I think not, so why would they fail the point check?
