Hi All. Have just started my 3.6 997.1 up after 2 weeks ( on trickle charge ) and immediately it did not sound right. It sounded like it was missing on 1 or 2 cylinders. Anyway I took it out thinking a bit of a run may sort it but engine light came on & ‘alert’ go to workshop. Limped home after less than a mile running like a bag of ‘sh*te ! Anyone experienced similar. My immediate thought was coil packs, but not really got a clue. Have owned the car 5 years.. it’s done 52k and had no previous engine problems. weeping

Hi, you need to get the error codes read with a diagnostic tester and see what that is first before guessing at anything. Mike

I’d get it recovered to your Indy.

Some years ago I didn’t drive my 996 fit a while and when I did, it took an age to start then ran like a bag of nails. Ended up having the coils replaced.

Thanks. I’m going to get a diagnostic test done this week. Problem being my Indy is 60 miles away.

Deffo bore scoring. Mario I'd get rid now and cut your losses.

Thanks. Do you get all 6 replaced or just faulty ones. Sorry but I know there are problems with them... but I’ve not come across it before. frown

Some of these simptoms seem similar to what I got last year and were indeed fixed with a new set (6x) of coil packs. I went OPC and it cost me €700. This was in Germany as I was in the middle of a road trip (received fantastic service from Porsche Nurenberg!).

I recall that 3x were looking very past their best while the other 3 were ok. I had all replaced for peace of mind, but you could save some cash and get only one or two done.

Apparently there is a new, more relaible, coil pack design. Make sure you get that one.

Thankyou very much for that info. I’m sure a supplier with old coil pack stock wouldn’t have told me that.

Always worth checking the breakdown on a job like this as sometimes it is more economical to get all 6 replaced at once.

I did the whole lot, because they were all cracking and are seen by some a perishable item.

Its "when" not "if" for them going, I was informed

My local VAG indie did them, although they have good pork experience.

I have now taken delivery of a diagnostic tester & it is telling me the engine is misfiring on cylinders 3,4&5 so it’s just finding a low cost way to transport it to my Indie (50 miles) or would this be a straight forward job for VW ? Cheers

Phone a garage and ask them how often they fix the 997. It doesn't require magic spanners, but you need experience.

Your problem could be something simple or something complex, you are still undiagnosed.

There’s a VAG indie close to my home (1 mile) I will speak to them. Thanks once again.

Try disconnecting and reconnecting the battery before you do anything else .

Hi, I just tried this and it seemed to be ticking over ok. I took the car out and about 1 mile on it started to misfire. Took car back home and diagnostics said misfiring cylinder 3 so still no idea.

Would Euro carparts coil packs be ok, or would OEM have to be used.

I do not know, my trusted indie did it. I'm would put a lot of money on the "Porsche" branded ones being made by Bosch or Beru.....

Pick the Beru coil packs from ECP. They are the factory fit manufacturer and are the later modified design that avoids cracking issues.
