Spotted a lovely manual at an OPC today with circa 8k miles full spec including PCCB and sitting inside it with a manual gear shift just felt perfect.

Got me thinking weather the manuals are still much preferred over the brilliant PDK box?

Henry Catchpoles YouTube videos certainly adds some weight to the manual argument for road use.

With a gun to my head I think I’d go manual

Put the Gun back in its Holster, would you also fit the Manual car with and 8 track player

It’s 2020,the manual box is a dinosaur yikes

FFS if manuals were any good they would be winning Le Mans with them, there not because they ain’t better and all this emotion bks about changing gear with my little Pinky is also bks getmecoat FFS

Can we move on now!!!

Well no not really

Maybe it comes down to where you drive your GT3 and also if lap times are all important.

I think Henry makes a good point for those that offer manual that generally drive on road

Also why are 911R’s bonkers money of no one wants manuals anymore ?
Genuine question

OP. The only person that can answer this is you. There is no right answer.......

PDK is a great gearbox....we own two cars with one. But I’ve got a manual in my 991.2 GT3...because that’s what I want and suits how I use my car.

I think if you intend to daily your GT3 or if lap times are important to you then probably PDK...but plenty of people daily manual gearbox cars and I reckon I get more enjoyment out of track driving my manual GT3 than I would a PDK...because it’s harder to get it right.

Henry’s point is that in reality for normal weekend use and the enjoyment of driving the Manual does add that level of enjoyment for road use .

Let’s not forget after the 991.1 GT3 there was a call for it .

Personally I’d have a manual GT3 probably something along the lines of D’s Car. Nicely judged imo. An RS then PDK - even if there was a choice.

Very subjective of course. Depends entirely on the drivers preferences

For me it’s involvement involvement involvement and learning a skill set.

I could go into much bigger reasons , but it upsets people :-)

Had both currently the 991.2 GT3 manual. Also had a 991.1 GT3 PDK from new.

PDK S a great gearbox and probably betters the 458 It. But....for such a capable drivers car something is missing. And that is interaction.

As other owners say a great package at the money and probably the sweetspot of contemporary Porsche GTs imo.

Only downside imo is the clutch is too 'snowflake' light but the gearbox action itself is on a par with the 981 GT4 which ratios apart is one of Porsches finest in terms of throw and action etc.

Henry C is correct in his great video set on the brilliant driving roads around Betws y Coed. And his perfect analogy between PDK being instant coffee compared to 'manuel' being freshly ground coffee sums up the two gearboxes perfectly. PDK does offer a few benefits but driver interaction is not one of them where every gearchange is the same as the last and the same as the next. Not so manual which requires a greater skill, where no gearchange is like the last or the next and when greater demands are placed on the driver having to drive with one hand on the wheel while the other changes gear. Yep, multitasking is a great challenge lol. Especially in a car like the GT3.

Ok, if you use your GT3 as a daily doing the commute there are advantages with PDK when sitting and crawling along in traffic congestion. But then again you may as well be driving a 3 series diesel auto.

But when a proper driving road appears, for the keen driver who likes a degree of challenge from his car which will reward him perfectly for the right amount of input there is no denying that the 'manuel' offers driver interaction in spades of which in reality PDK drivers can only dream of.

Manual gearboxes require multi tasking and an adept level of driver skill to change gear

My mate at the local OPC was quite clear in the fact if they had a manual and a PDK GT3 next to each other the PDK could be sold five times over before the manual would go.

Some people on this site like manuals, the majority want PDK.

There were loads of manuals specced for the 991.2 GT3 but I reckon the vast majority were thinking about resale... didn’t work out that way though.

Manual GT3s of the same spec actually sell better and get better prices than PDKs.

368 winged GT3 manuals and 251 winged GT3 PDKs registered in the UK.

Manuals were the more popular gearbox on newly supplied cars and furthermore there are far fewer for sale especially better spec cars as owners keep their cars. Hence the price difference.

When i was configuring my GT3 back in 2017 i was going back and forth from PDK to Manual on a daily basis for about two months. As i wasn't a track day user at the time i favoured Manual for my intended usage..However as my intention was for my GT3 to be only a short term car until my 991.2GT3 RS arrived i chose PDK as i knew i wouldn't be happy letting a Manual GT3 go.
Since my RS has arrived i've decided to use it for track days to learn a craft which i'm a novice at but longed to learn..I did my first track day in my RS yesterday and i'm so glad my RS has a PDK box..I wasn't really pushing it as it had only passed 1k miles and i'm still a novice however for track work PDK every time IMO..I still preferred it in Manual mode and used the paddles to change gear which i felt gave me more control over the car.
In retrospect i prefer the GT3 in Manual and an RS in PDK which is as it should be IMO..My perfect Porsche garage would include a 991.2GT3 RS WP coupled with a 991.2GT3 Touring(both in flat Black)..
If i was looking for a used GT3 today it would be a Manual winged CS as i couldn't justify the premium for a Touring.
