I have fitted new coilpacks to my car and they are larger than the old ones, i have ordered new heat shields as they were rusty and i know they will need spacing to fit, does anybody know how much they need spacing out so i can make sure i have the right spacers before i fit them?

Assuming you're talking about a 997 (?), I'm not sure they will. I changed my coil packs out a few months ago and sure enough, the newer ones were bigger - and, spookily, I replaced the heat shields at the same time - but they all bolted up with no issues.

Same on my 996 GT3.

I ordered 8mm M6 generic ally spacers from eBay and used longer bolts.

Be careful on sizing the bolts you don’t want them bottoming out!

Not sure which model 996 you have, but I’ve just fitted new Beru coil packs on my 996 turbo. The larger coils came with longer M6x40 bolts to replace the original M6x25.

The passenger side heat shield fitted back without adjustment, but the driver‘s side heat shield needed one of the coil pack fixing bolts heads to be cut down to avoid fouling the heat shield.

I did the same job on a 996 C4S, but Design911 supply coilpacks of the same dimensions as the original ones, so no heat shield adjustment was necessary. I understand the larger coil packs need a 6mm spacer between heat shield and fixing boss.

In both cases, I removed the rear bumper and exhaust mufflers, makes access so much easier.
