Stereo pops - 997 2007 c2s

Took me a little while to work out where the noise was coming from, it's a very occasional (once per 2 or 3 journeys) but fairly loud pop noise.
Similar noise to when you plug a guitar lead into an amp, you hear it at gigs when things are getting set up and it gives everyone a fright.
It happens whether the stereo is on or not. It's got sat nav but not Bose.
If anyone could point me in the correct direction for this or offer advice I would be grateful. Common fault with connection to stereo?
I've had a web search but it's mainly people getting the unit failing to work entirely. I don't think it will be a speaker connection problem since the noise can still happen when the system is turned off.
