Hi everyone. I Was just sat in traffic for maybe an 45 minutes and towards the end my engine temperature just went passed the mid point of 80. it went back down again as soon as I got up to speed on the A3.

anything to worry about? Im only thinking what if i was in traffic another half hour..
recently had the coolant hoses replaced couple of weeks ago but I checked water and everything its all good.

Is this 997.1 or .2?

My .1 never goes over the halfway mark, ever, even after high speed driving in summer.

I believe that this is effectively a "dampened" gauge, so doesn't accurately measure temperature.

Btw, the oil gauge is more accurate and keeps changing based on driving conditions.

It’s 2005 gen 1
Yeah I have never seen it move before. Oil temp has always moved depending. In traffic it has always nearly got to 120. But then drop down when you get moving.
Just weird to see the engine temp move slightly

Could it be as simple and when the coolant hoses where replaced the garage didn’t put enough coolant with the water?

I was going to suggest indeed coolant hoses. Bit of an issue on the 997 and with several locations to be addressed. I had the front x-pipes done last year. Eventually might need the ones along the bottom of the car as well as the ones over the engine.

Sounds like you had some of this work done already? Very likely related, would reccommend having an urgent look as one thing this engine doesn't do that well is cooling...

If recent work on cooling system, I'd suspect an airlock.
Whoever did the work should have told you about the possibility and what to do.

Other options might include:
check operation of both front fans and engine compartment fan
check water pump operation
check for coolant level & leaks (expansion tank and cap, front cross over pipes, water pump)

Is this the same 997 that had an engine rebuild by an idiot?! The one which was using oil at an alarming rate? The one for which recommendations for a competent engine builder were very recently being sought here on PH?

Mine did the one fan not working thing - got a stone stuck and prevented the right left fan from working which meant that the right hand fan was working over-time and sounding like a jet taking off to try and keep the temp down low. Even then the temp gauge never passed top dead centre.

I’ve just been out and the the left fan is running like jet engine and the right hardly if at all so I think it’s safe to say it’s a fan issue whoever called it lol

Yes it same car that’s likes it’s Mobil 1 Tuesday is d-day.

Apparently stones can often get caught up in it and wedge the fan so will take the l wheel liner off at weekend see if it’s anything like that.

it was just a stone caught in the fan stopping it from spinning up properly.

Thread resurrection. - is there any gauge that can be fitted to these cars for accurate temps?

I was data logging my 997.1 base the other day and hitbyhebfollowing readings in traffic:

- ambient temperature: 18C
- Engine temperature: 99C, cooled to 95C when the fan kicked it
- Oil temps: 95C

All the while the coolant temp gauge was pinned at 80C, which is a waste of time of it isn’t reading accurately. The Oil temps is more representative.

Any suggestions?
