CC 911 Carrera 2.7 RS
Discussion
Saw this car on Collecting cars and first bid is £50k, then £50.5k
Then next guy comes along and bids £400k!!! I mean why would you bid £349.5K more than the last bid
All this does is make it so obvious that this bid related to the seller and as such makes me really not want to be involved in bidding on such auction sites when stupid things like this are allowed

There’s a thread in the Supercars section discussing CC and some of the very strange bidding on multiple lots. Anyone would think people are doing it deliberately to bid lots up. One thing you can almost certainly guarantees is that the “people” that place these bids never buy the cars.

Are you referring to the ex-Jack Logan chartreuse RS?
I’m not familiar with the CC bidding process, but I have known that car since it came to the U.K. and it is an excellent , first 500, example with a full and interesting history - converted to ‘Sport’ (M471 lwt) specification in the 70s.
Value is potentially £500k, so a bid of £400k shows intent. Best person to talk to about it would be Fred Hampton (RS Sec). He’s known the car since new.

I just saw this car (link above) had gone form £50,500 to £400,000 in 1 bid. Fair enough it may be worth that but anyone wanting it would bid upto that not start at that surely ?

Cheers I did not realise this thread existed as I only look at CC now and again as the thought of buying a car bind is alien to me https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

I don’t think anyone would buy a car like this ‘blind’. Any serious buyer would carry out all the due diligence and checks.Agree, it’s probably tactical.
Some people won’t show their hand until the end of the sale, others may want to dismiss the dreamers early and get to the serious bidding more quickly.

They sell cars like this on there most weeks, there are some serious car collectors on that site. I’ve sold two cars on there, one went to America the other to Italy. I’ve also sold 4 Number plates on there and got strong money for them all. It’s not like eBay. The chap in the states had some one come to visit mine and inspect it so although he hadn’t actually viewed it himself he had done due diligence.Agree, it’s probably tactical.

To put it into perspective, spending a few million on a painting that you’ve never seen is far more daunting than buying an Iconic Sports Car to me.
I agreed my reserve with them prior and on the last number plate I sold it went for 4K over that.
The buyer deposited the money straight away and then casually asked that I drop the paperwork off if and when I was passing. Which was 175 miles away.

it's entirely normal auction practice to bid a car up to it's reserve - and frankly if it doesn't meet it's reserve it won't sell anyway, so it's not irregular practice - if the car had no reserve, then yes it would be highly risky and wrong, but otherwise it's done to speed up the process and remove time wasters.
The car in question is a first class example, and whilst i am a little out of the loop regards pricing at the moment, i would imagine the reserve would be in the mid 4's.

I know the car very well, its superb , if you are in the know or inner circle of these cars, its one of the best out there,it wont be selling for 400, i would have thought the reserve would be higher than 4 also.
Its a realistic starting bid and good luck to the owner.
Out of interest how is an Touring RS regarded that’s been modified to Lightweight spec ? Guessing the fact it was done in period is better than if it was done today (assuming you could find the parts). Its a realistic starting bid and good luck to the owner.
Would it actually be worth any more than a Touring that’s in similar condition/known history etc ?

Makes perfect sense to me - what is the point in slowly bidding it up if it is below reserve anyway. Different price segement but I bid on a car that was at 22k and I bid 30k as a next step, to get the thing moving (sold for c 44k in the end from memory)
This. The first couple of bids were obviously not going to buy the car. Neither were the next load of bids if they kept going up in £5k increments! Rather than muck about, anyone serious about buying the car would want to get some feel for the reserve and competition.I understand the car is now available for inspection at Tuthills as I am sure serious bidders would want to have a look or get someone to look over it for them.

Proper lwt seats are v expensive now,not much difference between a lwt and touring, some have come back in price but the good ones still selling and commanding strong prices.
