I'm looking at a 2005 997 CARRERA 2 TIPTRONIC S which states in the log book that it's indeed an 'S', but it also states that the engine size is 3.6L (3596 cc). I thought all 997 'S' models were 3.8L and non-S variants were 3.6L. Hence confused, as looking up the number plate it also shows as both 3.6L and an 'S', anyone know why this is and what I'm missing?

Confusingly, the gearbox is called a 'tiptronic S' so there are some nefarious dealers who advertise them as such. Safest way to check is via the chassis and or engine number but you are correct, all 997 S models are 3.8.

It is a Tiptronic S and not a Carrera S.
The later tiptronic gearbox got called the tiptronic S as it had manual shift capability (I think that was the reason).
The Carrera has a 3.6 and the Carrera S has a 3.8.
The car you are looking at is a Carrera with the Tiptronic S gearbox.

My 996 is the same and sometimes causes difficulties with insurers as they think it is a Carrera S.

This, it's the gearbox that is "S" not the car. All 997 Carrera S's are 3.8. The base Carrera is a 3.6 but could be purchased with the Tiptronic S gearbox.

Porsche are selling it though, so as per the pic you think they would remove that S is that was the case. Metal door seals have 's' too.

That is very misleading. Got a link to the advert?

Edit:
Found the advert on Autotrader. It is not being sold by Porsche, it is a private seller.
The description does not say it is a Carrera S. The description of Carrera Tiptronic S is correct.

The badges are misleading, so being generous to the seller they might not know they are wrong but on the other hand they are likely to know and are just saying nothing about them.

Pretty certain the S had round tail pipes and didn’t have that S on the back.

that's a standard Carrera

the S badge is taken from a 996 4S

that's my guess, and I don't usually guess unless I know I'm right.........

This. The 997 Carrera S has always had twin exhaust pipes. (edited for clarity)
