981 Spyder to GT3 touring
Discussion
It’s winter and I’m probably not thinking straight (I love convertibles as they add 10MPH to any speed you’re doing and you can hear the sound of the flat six more), but has anyone gone from a 981 Spyder to a GT3 touring, and if so what were the pluses and minuses? I’m not sure I can justify having both.
Is the GT3 any good at slow speeds as well, or does it only feel good at higher speeds. The Spyder is brilliant but not great slow compared to the older cars.
GT3 wise I’ve only driven the 997.2 which was clearly great but quite harsh from memory and same old long gearing felt a bit much for the road.
Generally I’m doing the odd Sunday drive and tours of the alps every other year if we’re still allowed after brexit.

I did this. Will post a longer update when I’m ‘back at my desk’. Whilst it was a no brainier for me and I would do the same every time, I would have preferred to keep both. They are too different to make a direct comparison.
you say this but I think you want a 991 Speedster really :-)If prices drop to sub £200k I might do the same and sell a few to have one but not at £240k but they are creeping down monthly and all del miles.

Yes, I’d be tempted to consolidate into a speedster if sub 200k. Not sure we’ll get there though? If prices drop to sub £200k I might do the same and sell a few to have one but not at £240k but they are creeping down monthly and all del miles.

In answer to your specific questions: Whilst the 981 Spyder flat-six sounds good, the GT3 Touring is on another level from a noise perspective - sounds like a race-car, banshee-like, revving to 9,000. The GT3 is good at all speeds - feels very special but it is quite harsh (not what I would call a daily) compared to the Spyder. The Spyder is much more usable on a daily basis in my opinion. For Sunday drives and trips to the Alps, the GT3 is perfect - you will love it.Is the GT3 any good at slow speeds as well, or does it only feel good at higher speeds. Key question is about convertible vs coupe. That's your biggest problem I think. I kept my 987 Spyder, which made it an easier decision for me - but I would miss a convertible if I did not have one. As has been mentioned, the Speedster is the 'compromise' but they're out of my price range. Hope that helps a bit.

Thanks. Your comments are what I would expect. That’s interesting about the low speed stuff with the GT3, as that is where the Spyder disappoints just a little (but not that much). I feel like the 981 is fine once above 40 but I love it when cars are enjoyable at all speeds. One day maybe I will aim for a GT3 or speedster and only keep my 964 to go with it (brilliant at all speeds, incidentally).Key question is about convertible vs coupe.
