Hi guys

After having had a couple of very noisy cars that I’ve really struggled to get through a trackday without being black flagged with, I’ve just bought a 991.2 GT3 manual and wondered with the stock exhaust what people have found to be the average drive by and static noise level tests ?

I know it depends on atmospheric conditions etc but a rough idea would be good as don’t want to be booking Brands GP etc and getting thrown off again !

Thanks

Not an owner but I don't think 991.2 GT3s do well at Brands. Goodwood is ok with a lift/gear up in acceleration zones

I got chucked off a 95db day at Goodwood and was flagged a lot on 105db day. They said that the PDK cars seem to be OK and it’s the manuals they have issues with. As already said, I was able to manage it at Goodwood once I knew where the issue was. You will always pass the static test as they have a Rev limit on them.

Brands GP is very bad for noise. If you know where to short shift and you don't touch the exhaust button you can get away with it, but it's not ideal. Standard db is circa 98 on a static test, I'm not sure what that translates to on a drive by, but for reference I've done silver stone on a 102 DB drive by day and not had an issue. HTH.

Ok thanks guys. Sounds as though I’ll need to be careful again. It’s getting very frustrating these days trying to get through a day without being black flagged.

I had no issues at Silverstone. Perhaps there’s just more ‘air’ to muffle the noise. Very wide and open?

Agree with Spy. No issues at Silverstone. Problems elsewhere though - Donnington, Bedford etc. Can just scrape by if lifting near the microphones. Do end up getting pulled though.

The only places you`ll have a problem is Bedford and Goodwood. Donnington if your running in a pack.

This should solve your problems for the tracks that are touch and go.

Well, it is made of Titanium and in relative terms it’s a small price to pay if it means your £130k 991.2GT3 can be used on track without worry of upsetting the noise Police.

I know Akrapovic do one too, but probably a similar price and will be Titanium too. Anyone know of any cheaper options out there??

I dropped that much on a secondhand 2tubar quiet system for my Lotus Exige 380 and I still had bloody issues, I’d be quite happy to spend this if I knew it would actually work well enough for Goodwood especially, its so close to me and I love the track.

Any other suggestions or feedback on how effective it is would be greatly appreciated ?

I’m in a similar boat, albeit PDK not manual, so will be keeping an eye on this thread.

I recently bought a 991.2 GT3RS (mainly to use for trackdays), but having now driven the car on the road and explored 8-9,000rpm I am thinking noise limits at certain tracks are likely to be an issue.

At higher rpm’s the car sounds louder (to my ears) than my 488 which has prompted the concern, as I got black flagged in the first session, for exceeding the drive-by limit on the Brands Hatch GP circuit by 8dB (it was a 92dB drive-by limit) ... I ended up having to run for the other sessions in wet mode and short shifting, to avoid getting booted off the day, but it spoilt the day for sure.

I doubt the static noise tests will be an issue in the RS (logic being the rev limiter will help), but the drive by limits are likely to be an issue, especially at tracks with a lower noise limit, eg:

Donington 98dB drive-by limit
Brands Hatch 92dB drive-by limit

- I booked Donington, but won’t book Brands until I’ve got a solution, as can see it being well over 92dB in stock form.

I don’t have any answers myself yet, so can only share the info I’ve found from my Googling and searching various forums.

So far I’ve come across things such as “dB killers” which are far cheaper, but I am not convinced that stuffing something up my exhaust is such a great idea. I would think it’s likely to induce more back pressure which could cause engine issues. (Any experts know if this will be an issue?)

I’m thinking a silencer mod - that has been designed specifically for this purpose - is a better way to go.

Options I’ve found so far, include the JCR titanium Silencer tips (as someone else posted), but quite pricey at £1,095.00
https://www.jcr-developments.com/jcr/product/991-9...

I’ve also found the UBER9s steel version, at £420
https://uber9s.com/product/gt3-bolt-on-trackday-si...

SOUL in US offer a very different approach, with separate tail pipes being added to their silencer section.
Nice idea if they be rotated to direct noise away from noise meters, depending on which track you’re driving.
This is $874 inc shipping to UK.
https://soulpp.com/product/porsche-991-1-gt3-bolt-...

Note >> None of these are recommendations as I haven’t seen or heard any of them in the flesh.

I also came across an interesting JCR video on YouTube, which was discussing exhaust options (mainly reducing weight and improving sound, rather than specifically reducing noise for trackdays) although it does give some noise levels of various configurations of their systems and original fit Porsche systems, at the end of their video (screen grab below).

My car is a 2018 pre-OPF car, running stock exhaust system, so according to this would be running around 98dB. Based on this I’ll hopefully be OK at Donington (98dB) but time will tell.

I will be keeping a watchful eye on this thread, as I’m sure others have first hand knowledge/experience on this.

None of these solutions are particularly cheap, but given I bought the car primarily to use on trackdays, it would be completely pointless if I keep getting black flagged all the time or not being able to take the car to some tracks. Getting black flagged at Brands really spoilt the day ... I spent the rest of the day being nervous and driving cautiously. I’d much sooner have ‘something’ with me, that I could quickly fit, to enable me to run for the rest of the day, knowing I will be ok.

I’ll update after I’ve made my choice and once I know the effects ... but hopefully others who’ve already tried these things may add to the thread in the meantime.

That really surprises me tbh.
Is yours a 2019 car (post OPF car)?

Ok the American solution looks interesting as with my Exige I was advised to point one tip one way and one the other If tracks had mic’s on both sides of the tracks.

It’s getting such a faff, you buy a car designed for track use and even with stock exhaust you can’t use it properly.

I’ve had so many issues and paying for a track day and then having to lift off and drive slowly totally ruins the day.

Be fascinated to know if anyone has any experience of these US tips ??
