991 Gts or 992s ( needs to be a manual )
Discussion
I was just about to pull the trigger on a 992 last year when I got cold feet and the thought of a Boot that I could actually use after 6 years of F-Type ownership swayed me and I Bought a New Macan GTS ( my first Porsche) .. it’s been getting on for 8 months now and though it’s a great machine, I’m missing the sports car fun and the general feeling of excitement when I jump in the car !! So I am once again building up to buying a 911, budget is around 90k-100k and I still prefer the looks of the 992 but the 991 Gts has the SOUND and a few more manuals to choose from !! I would be going for the base 992 if it came with a manual but as not it will have to be a used S or very lightly specced new one .. just looking for any help or guidance as to what May be the best way to go and for any tips from owners of either ..
Thanks in advance guys

I would go for the manual 991.2 GTS with ceramic's, if you can get one.
The main reason for this, is the in the gear ratio's, something that is very hard to track down off Porsche.
The 992 gear ratio's are now a lot longer, so the in gear speeds are higher, not as bad as the GT4's but still a problem for taking away the excitement of a manual car on the road.
You can not blame Porsche, they are doing their best and should be thanked for offering a manual, but the ratio's have to be altered to meet the emission standards.
991.2 GTS 1st = 45MPH 2nd = 74MPH 3rd = 94MPH
992 Manual 1st = 48MPH 2nd =85MPH 3rd = 110MPH
These are just my figures from driving the cars, it is a shame they can not have the ratio's on the first three gears in the 992 PDK box.
992 PDK 1st = 45MPH 2nd 65MPH 3rd = 85MPH
Plus the 991.2 has a lot more exhaust noise and overrun from the exhaust in sport mode.
Just my thoughts from my cars, my GT4 did 118MPH in 3rd gear!!
If someone has the exact factory speeds, put them up, it would be good to see.
Keep any comments positive, some drivers may think it is good that you only have to change gear once on a track day, you can then concentrate on the corners!!

Hi Purpleman
I am leaning strongly towards the 991Gts for all the points you mentioned , interesting about the gear ratios , had not really thought about that but great point . !! If you want a manual , not much benefit if you rarely actually change gears !!
Also there are so few manual 992 out there I will have to wait an age for a used one . New is an option but the spec will be poverty 😢😢😢😢
Didn’t the 991 gts have a exhaust change due to emissions laws at some point and if so anyone know when ?? Would really prefer the pre exhaust as love the sound, That was a major smile factor in the F-types 😊

I had a similar dilemma in the summer. 992 or 991.2 GTS.
In the end I went for the GTS (mine is PDK). Not regretted it for a second and enjoying the car more and more the longer I have it.
Just feels a bit more ‘special’ than a non GTS.
Can I ask what year yours was and did it have the new exhaust or the older unmuted one ?? I know these things are very Spec dependent did you struggle finding one or was there some choice ? This is the car I bought - link still seems to work. https://www.romansinternational.com/used-vehicle-d...
I spent quite a bit of time looking but was helped because most cars were PDK which was my preference. Age probably. There was some choice albeit not loads so I jumped on the first one I saw with the right spec and my preferred colour.

I just sold my 991.2 GTS (PDK) to RPM Tecnik last month. Was an amazing car, I think they still have photos on their website.
Mine was April 2018 (pre OPF).
I believe post the summer 2018 shut down of the Porsche factory, all cars subsequently had OPF.
Sorry - forgot that bit. Mine is the louder exhaust I think. Can’t be 100 per cent sure having not heard the muted version but I can say I’m not disappointed with the soundtrack. I have my individual settings with PSE on so it is a quick turn of the dial on the steering wheel when I set off. Mine was April 2018 (pre OPF).

I remember seeing that car , Romans are just down the road from where I live . Nice car and looks fantastic , can I ask what you had to pay ? Did they Neg at all or was it just to nice to risk losing for a haggle ? https://www.romansinternational.com/used-vehicle-d...

I may consider a pdk if spec and colour is perfect but need the early exhaust . I see from another thread you are thinking of getting a 992 Gts when they come out , still considering or happy with your current car ?

So a definite recommendation then !! Thanks for exhaust info , I knew it was something like that . Is there a big difference in the sound ??Mine was April 2018 (pre OPF).

I will be driving it almost as a daily 6-7k a year , is this doable ?
Thanks
Have had both a 991.1GTS and a 991.2GTS. Both fantastic cars but the sound of the 991.1 is a massive improvement over the 991.2, although mine was Mar 19 car so would have had the filters.
The internet says the 992 manual is a better manual gearbox, so if that's important, you should drive one. I can also report the 992 sounds better than the 991.2 but not the 991.1.....
In the round I think the 992 is the better car and has better steering. You can't go wrong a GTS, they are always good value and popular for a reason and of course all 911's make great daily drivers.

This is a very good point, definite preference for a pre OPF car. IIRC all the post Summer 18 cars were 4wd GTS’s...might be wrong though.Mine was April 2018 (pre OPF).

Not a lot of negotiation to be honest - it was my preferred spec so I wanted to secure it and contacted them the day it was listed. It was up at £90k. I paid £89.5k. Perhaps the top end price wise but I was happy and still am! Romans were great to deal with - better than my local OPC (who are good for Service but their Sales team have frustrated me previously). Made for a nice drive home too!
Yes, I have a £5k deposit nominally listed against a 992 C4S that transfers to a 992 GTS when that’s possible. I’ll wait to see what sort of response the 992 GTS receives but at the moment I am really happy with the 991 so it’ll take something special to make me change.
I've just picked up a 991.2 GTS manual. I had a 992S last year and before then a 991.2 GTS PDK, GT4, 2x GT3's etc. I've also got a 993S which has become a bit of a garage queen.
I LOVE the 991.2 GTS manual. The manual box transforms the car, its so much more fun than the PDK. I was lucky as I wasn't looking but just came across the car at my OPC when I was picking up a new wheel for my wife's Macan GTS.
The 992 is a lovely car, I know it sounds a cliche, but it does feel like a softer, heavier car, basically less 911-like than the 991.2. So I guess it depends on what you want?? If you want a comfortable more GT-esque car, the 992 would be the choice. If you want something that feels more of an event, the 991.2 GTS would be (and is) my choice.

Interesting experience Rich. Out of interest, what spec was your 992? I ask as I wonder if it has PSP?
I didn't get on with my 991.2 but it was PDK and had the filters, which was quite the let down after the 991.1GTS. How does the 991.2GTS manual compare to the GT3 manual? I think that's the best Porsche manual I have driven (991.2 GT3).

Hi Tom - my 992 S had PDK, sunroof, RWS, lowered suspension, LED, BOSE, Sport-tex and a load of other bits. cost £110k. The 991.2 GTS manual is great. It's just the right side of mechanical and the 7th gear is an easy choice on the Way. The 6 speed GT3 box is better, slightly more feel, but there's not much in it. Best box I've used was the 997.2 GT3. GT4 came close for action and feel, but those ratios do take some fun out of the gearboxI didn't get on with my 991.2 but it was PDK and had the filters, which was quite the let down after the 991.1GTS.
