Hi guys,

i have been considering the idea of buying a used 911 for a long time, but have always been put off with the horror stories and the potential costs.

As life has changed with the pandemic, my need for a car has changed, and rather than stick with the regular new car on PCP or lease cycle I have been in for years, I am now starting my journey to 911 ownership.

I am looking at spending between £30-50k depending on the deal, the less the better, but I am flexible if the right car comes up. I am wondering if people can point me to some reputable places to start the journey and up my knowledge on what to look out for.

I have had a look on a few sites and have seen quite the variation in prices. Some stunning 2008 models for close to my £30k and then some early 2010's direct from Porsche for around £50k with decent specs...

I know that no choose is going to be cheap, but ideally i dont want to be hit with unnecessary big bills. Any reputable documentation on the ownership challenges and costs would be great too so I can go into this eyes filly open.

Thanks in advance

911 Virgin get good reviews, esp at the lower end of money/older stuff. Worth a look, pretty friendly to chat to - I found the main dealers less interested in run-of-the-mill 2nd hand stuff, they'd rather get you into a PCP contract IMHO.

It'll be a worthwhile journey, along which you'll learn of the differences in models and specs and also establish what your particular must haves are, whether they be manual, PDK, Chrono/PASM and PSE etc..

I went through the same cycle three years ago, starting with the idea that a 997 C2S would be my entry point.

There are many opinions on what are the 'better' models and options to go for.

My search resulted in an escalation and increased spend, buying a 991.1 GTS which I still have and don't regret, however the depreciation in the last 3 years alone would've (almost) paid for the 2009 C2S that I first started my search with.

I do feel a 997.2 C2S with a good history remains the sweet spot for a modern 911 that won't break the bank in either depreciation or running costs (with a good indy).

I have a gen2 997 C4s. Definitely wouldn’t consider using it every day. Too old, too vulnerable, too prone to corrosion. But I’d only consider a gen 2, and manual. The more you spend the more you get - for 50k you’d get a v low mileage car. Starting again I’d probably get a 991 if it was to be a daily, and then I’d spend a few K getting the underside protected.
