It now seems an endless stream of new GT2, GT3, GT2, GT4, Speedsters or Spyders being launched across the 911, Cayman or Boxster platform.

It's quite a list just for the watercooled cars (and no doubt I'll have missed one or two).

You then end up with a list of which are the "special specials".

911 GT3 or RS
• 992.1 GT3

• 991.2 GT3 RS
• 991.2 GT3 Touring (Man)
• 991.2 GT3 (Man/PDK)

• 991.1 GT3 RS (PDK only)
• 991.1 GT3 (PDK only)

• 997.2 GT3 RS 4.0 (Man)
• 997.2 GT3 RS 3.8 (Man)
• 997.2 GT3 (Man)

• 997.1 GT3 RS (Man)
• 997.1 GT3 (Man)

• 996.2 GT3 RS (Man)
• 996.2 GT3 (Man)

• 996.1 GT3 (Man)

GT2
• 991.2 GT2 RS (PDK)

• 997 GT2 RS (Man)
• 997 GT2 (Man)

• 996 GT2 Mk2 (Man)
• 996 GT2 Mk1 (Man)

911 Special Editions
• 991.2 Speedster
• 991.1 R (Man)

• 997 Sport Classic
• 997 Speedster

Cayman GT4
• 718 Cayman GT4

Seems a lot but you could say the same for 'trim level' across any brand. BMW created a whole new range in the 4-series just by removing 2 doors. Then you have all the M variants. You can thank the marketing people

Audi, BMW, Mercedes and, increasingly, Porsche - all now have a mind-numbing range of models and trim levels, with formulaic new launches virtually every week.

You have to be a complete car nerd to really know or understand all the differences.

From my experience, 99% of people would not be able to explain the Porsche range hierarchy. Most would assume the Turbo is the best and everything else is a muddle.

Yes. The 996 GT3 RS was 2004-2005 and had the Gen 2 lights there was no Gen 1. The original 996 GT3 was Gen 1 the Gen 2 got the facelift including lights as per the GT3 RS which followed.

You joke but you may never gave thought of it that way! smile

No was merely enquiring...I have only ever seen a 996RS with the fried egg headlights. If you have a pic of each I would be grateful as it is a car that interests me

Depending on where you draw the line re special editions, there are a few more I think (the Endurance Edition, the Exclusive Turbos, Exclusive Targas, Rennsport Reunion, Martini Racing Edition and I think the US had a couple additional ones plus am sure I forgot a few)

Also there are the track special such as GT2 Clubsport and 935

Was there a gen 1 996 GT2? Surely not - the turbo is .2 ... albeit facelifted late 2001 with the glovebox etc

I thought all the GT2s were 996.2

Happy to be wrong, if they did indeed have some non-facelifted ones

Not a 996.1, but there were 2 different iterations of the GT2 (both with same headlights). later one a lot rarer, GT3 Style rims and a little more power

Plus carbon wing

Seems like there are potentially a couple of 992 Specials on the way

“992 Sport Classic”

“992 Safari”
