Swooping a 997.1 for 993 Cab?
Discussion
Hi all, any advice would be welcome, I have a C2S manual 997.1 which I have had for 8 + years but I always wanted to switch to a 993 and for some reason I really like the convertible one even though I usually hate cabs.
I don't really want to sell my 997.1 first, even though the market is pretty good now because I want to make sure I get a nice replacement!
I kind of figured what with the emissions stuff around towns and 997.1 going up slightly in value its probably not a bad time to do the swop but I did wonder (a) if the chances of finding somebody wanting to change from 993 to 997 is low and (b) how much extra would you need, I though 15k ish?? Maybe that's optimistic....
Thanks indeed!!

Definitely drive a 993 Cab before you make any decisions. It'll be older and slower than your 997.1 C2S coupe.
I never took to my manual 993 C4 varioram coupe which didn't feel quick coming from a 3.2 Carrera. The cabs also lack the structural rigidity of a coupe.
Personally I'd have thought a 997.2 Cab would be a better move or a Boxster 987.2 if you don't need the rear seats.
You gel with some cars and don't with others so I'd always go and drive one or two.

That's interesting, its a brave man that says something bad about a 993, I also had a 3.2 and I have not driven a 993 in years so yes probably a v good idea.I never took to my manual 993 C4 varioram coupe which didn't feel quick coming from a 3.2 Carrera. In terms of anything newer/as new I just think you simply need to drive new cars too fast for them to be enjoyable, I also have an Alfa 105 coupe and an abarth 500 classic (replica) so its definitely an older feel I am looking for but I assumed the 993 Cab would not be a million miles from the coupe.....

I just didn't gel with it as it fell between the classic 911 look and wasn't really fast.In terms of anything newer/as new I just think you simply need to drive new cars too fast for them to be enjoyable, I also have an Alfa 105 coupe and an abarth 500 classic (replica) so its definitely an older feel I am looking for but I assumed the 993 Cab would not be a million miles from the coupe.....
I did actually try a 993 Cab which felt flexly as did the Targa before I picked the 993 coupe. Ended up in another 3.2 Carrera some rime later (which I loved again) but they do require more up keep if used.
Have you considered a 993 Targa?
Had one for 2 years, commuted in it daily for a while, had enough of the old school 911 about it, ultimately felt bad about piling the miles on the old girl...
Full drop tops are a bit wobbly when you’re pushing on, but for 90% of the time are just lovely to punt along the lanes..
Great cars

The 993 targa is based on the 993 Carrera cabriolet with the Targa glass roof replacing the fabric roof.Had one for 2 years, commuted in it daily for a while, had enough of the old school 911 about it, ultimately felt bad about piling the miles on the old girl...

So still a reduction in rigidity compared to the coupe and more complexity with the targa roof which does give more light all the time but is more like a giant sunroof.
An upside is prices of 993 cabs are lower than coupes.

Yes the Cabs seem a good bit lower, especially manual coupe 993 are few and far between. For some reason I don't seem to love the targa, its the Cab that I just think looks fantastic but I do like the rigidity you get with a coupe and will miss that.So still a reduction in rigidity compared to the coupe and more complexity with the targa roof which does give more light all the time but is more like a giant sunroof.

I will MOT and service my 997 and then see what happens to the market, I'm in no rush and this is probably not the best time of year to buy a Cab.....

They are indeed, exactly as you say, nicer lines though. Dark colours almost conceal the break line. So still a reduction in rigidity compared to the coupe and more complexity with the targa roof which does give more light all the time but is more like a giant sunroof.

My black one.
Never had a problem with the roof mechanism, although when they go wrong they’re awfully fiddly to sort.
However the cab’s are lovely things to punt along in. A/C an absolute must for Euro trips

Don't get me wrong I still think the 993 is a great looking car just sadly never gelled.
Personally I think the newer watercooled 911 cabs look better.
996 C4S Cab is a great looking car or 997, but I prefer a 911 coupe and would opt for a Boxster if I wanted a convertible.

I can't help directly, but I did own a 993 coupe and a 1989 Supersport ragtop at the same time, and drove them extensively back to back.
I was surprised how good the older ragtop was. Even though the SS chassis/susp etc is essentially a turbo, I would imagine a 993 cab would be an improvement?
You may spend some more money however, getting whatever 993 into a 'handling' state that makes you happy.

...but be careful - a test-drive in a poorly set-up 993 will make you think 'ugh what is all the fuss about?', but one which is set-up well, and to your liking, is a seriously involving thing.YoungMD said:

Agree totally. As you say, a 993 isn't about full-on speed, so if you want the involvement the classics bring, and want a ragtop, don't let the wobbliness-or-not put you off.You may spend some more money however, getting whatever 993 into a 'handling' state that makes you happy.

Have to say that looks lovely - the 997 is a great car but the finer lines and back of the 993 are so much nicer! My black one.

I’m crying, back in 2007 I had the choice of 2 911’s at local specialist for same price.
A 1997 993 targa manual or a 1998 996 C2 tiptronic.
“Of course go for the 996, it’s the new model”
Well I sold a 3.2 carrera to 911virgin for 5.5k back in 2000 ish and it wasn't in bad condition.....and I sold it for a Toyota previa ......A 1997 993 targa manual or a 1998 996 C2 tiptronic.
