Hi all

I’ve unfortunately got a screw in my tyre which is causing a slow puncture. I assume this can be repaired but I am having some difficulty in finding a place which deals with centre locking wheel nuts. I did a search on the forums and it looks like I may be heading up towards black boots in Chesham (they have good reviews although not that local).

I therefore thought it was worth asking on here in case anyone could recommend somewhere a little more local around Windsor area. I’ve tried a couple of local independents (Porsche torque and 911virgin) but they don’t do tyre repairs (only replacements)

Thanks in advance

That looks very close to the sidewall and might not be repairable.

If you're in or around Windsor, try Thomas and Spicer, under the railway arches next to Windsor & Eton Central station at the bottom of Alma Road. They are an independent tyre business and get consistently good feedback from locals. I suspect you'll get better unbiased advice from them than you'd get from one of the larger chains.

p.s. I just noticed you mentioned centre-locks. I haven't asked if they can handle Porsche centre locks, but I'd be interested in the answer for my own GT3!

As above, close to the edge - I suspect you'll probably need a replacement:

"British standard (BSAU159). This standard defines the requirements for safe minor tyre repair and its proximity to the sidewall. To remain compliant, we are only able to carry out tyre repairs to the central ¾ of the tyre"

Try Kev at Wraysbury tyres just over Chertsey Bridge.

But I suspect as many have mentioned that needs replacing rather than repairing, not sure many would risk it.

Thanks all, really helpful. Glad I asked !

At least they are local, so I can pop down and show one of them the damage.

Ps Thomas & Spicer said he has done them before but usually borrows one of the torque wrenches from a local garage.

Yes, another for Thomas & Spicer. Mike's a top chap who hillclimbs a Ferrari and has vintage cars. Know's what he's talking about and as straight as they come.

If you do end up at Black Boots they’re excellent. They’ve done my CL wheels a couple of times….three of them on the job and they all check the CL is on and the spring loaded lock released etc.

Looks like you'll need a vulcanised repair for that one. More expensive than simple plugging and takes an hour or so (it has to cool/cure) but on a big tyre with that much tread left it's probably worth the effort. Cost should be from about £25

Thats very close to being a new tyre, possibly wouldn't know until the tyre was off. Do you have the nut for the centre lock ? If you can find someone who cares and possibly deals with commercial as well as cars you should be ok, we have a suitable torque wrench but are nowhere near you - sorry

Yep - have the nut for the centre lock and after watching a few YouTube vids and reading the manual I think I could take the wheel on and off if I had the torque wrench (I’m thinking I might actually buy one).

So a shout out to Black Boots Chesham who more than satisfied my OCD with a GTS on centre locks when having 4 x MP4S fitted. Absolutely no trace of the wheels having been on a tyre fitting machine, locking device set for you to see an excellent job with competitive pricing and patience locating those hard to find MP4S tyres. 👍

Yeah, I ended up going to them too and couldn’t fault their service.
