£10,000 for car and bike
Discussion
Ive decided it’s time to sell my Golf. Ive lost confidence in it after the DSG went last month.
I’ll have around £10,000 to spend. Maybe more maybe less.
I miss having a bike and it will be used for a commute in the future. I’m pretty much sure I’ve decided what bike I want. Prices are around £5,000/£6,000 at the moment. But in no rush.
Requirements are fairly basic.
Budget of £4,000/£5000. I could increase this and wait to get a bike.
Petrol or diesel. I don’t travel into cities with clean zones.
Will be used for all travel when I’m with my other half. Trips away etc.
I like gadgets, cruise control would be nice. Along with a built in sat nav. Heated seats are a bonus.
Most importantly reliable and reasonable repair costs if it does go wrong!
MPG isn’t that important, 30s would be nice.
I’m drawn towards another Mondeo with a decent spec. Ive had a diesel ST and other than being a lemon (heart choice at the time) it wasn’t too bad. Did everything I needed. Also had a 330D but was another lemon (see the pattern?) but doesn’t fit the cheap to repair part!
Not fussed about high mileage. Ideally no older than 2010 though.

Now I'm bias as I've had/have a few CLK's but they tick most of your boxes (apart from being a 2009) they're nice inside & will do trips away with ease parts, are VW levels of in terms of cost but they don't really go wrong.I’ll have around £10,000 to spend. Maybe more maybe less.

You'll get heated seats as well as cruise & as an added bonus when you drop all the windows away & open the sunroof it's like having a convertible too, with a decent map you'll see mid to high 40's on a run without one it'll be low to mid 40's.

Now the gearbox fluid has to be changed every 40k it's a £250-300 job so knock this off if there aren't any receipts showing it's been done, these cars will do big miles with ease mine did.
With regards to the Nav I'd suggest adding one of these Pioneer SPH DA230/250DAB they bring you bang up to date tech wise so you have DAB/Android Auto/Apple Carplay Google Maps Waze etc it'll cost around £500 fully fitted but it's a been a welcome addition on my CLK's.

What bike were you thinking of getting?

I like that! Will take a look at them a bit more
.
Bike wise I’m looking at a BMW R1200GS.
Properly a bit overkill for my commute to work if I move, but like the ideas of some trips away (and sports bikes aren’t for me!).
Nice bike choice (it doesn't matter what type of bike you ride as long you're riding

) there's no such thing as As I said I'm bias but the CLK is a quality pick car wise.

Best set a bigger budget to allow for repairs then!
I've had 2 BM bikes and a lot of my mates had or have GS's. I 100% would not have a BMW bike that wasn't covered by a warranty!
Have you checked the Honda NC750X? About a third of the cost of a GS, good looking practical bike and definitely more Adventure style than Sports bike. Plus Honda reliability of course. I will be test riding one soon hopefully.

Agreed on the BMW bike warranty. I would much prefer to go for a Honda (or any other japanese bike).
In the same situation i went for an Africa Twin, but i sold it quite quickly as it didn't have enough "engine".
Replaced with a 1400 GTR, which has a cracking engine, is silky smooth, has shaft drive, great lights, mirrors and screen. It's quite wide for filtering, but still possible.
Car-wise, i guess it depends where you want to put your money, and what your usages are. If you're spending 99% of your time in a car, then spend most of the money on that.
In your situation i'd probably go with a blackbird for £3k - solid reliability. Fast, smooth and can tour, commute, etc. And will hold money.
