I'm sure this has been done to death but my search foo is failing me. My 120k/mile 03 996TT has a (hairline) cracked turbo housing and I'm advised I'm going to be looking at an engine out job to replace the turbo's at some point in the future.

Naturally I see this as an option to upgrade. I'll most likely use my local spannerman (Porsche specialist) rather than 9e or similar as he's looked after me and the car well. He's suggested a few options to look at but I'm always keen to hear other ideas.

An upgrade in the power department would help it feel a little less like the poor relative next to the R8. Reliability and driveability are more important than outright speed though.

Some suggestions and indicative figures (power and budget!) would be appreciated.

I am sure you will get plenty of advice for turbo upgrades to k16 hybrids or k24’s but why the engine out, they are pretty easy to get at from under the car….

Interesting... I will ask the question. Thanks.

It’s true. 9e also has a fairly standard price / job spec for this and is well versed. Needs to include things like oil lines etc. worth calling and talking to for a second opinion.

I'd start by getting your car running as it should. The standard 996 turbo is more than a match for a standard R8 V8 without the need for a power upgrade, so you need to ensure it's all working correctly.

Then there are no many options:

- Chip/ map
- Exhaust
- Turbos
- Brakes
- Suspension
- Short shift kit
- Wheels

Really depends what you want to achieve by modifying.

They are maybe quoting for the engine out due to expecting the oil lines to be seized and needing engine removal for access

Exactly that. Tbf they aren't "quoting" at this stage, just giving me a heads up of what could be involved.

There's a few jobs I'd do whilst engine is out.

Pin coolant lines. No brainer a known weakness at this age if they have not been looked at already they can fail.

https://www.markskituning.com/product-category/996...

Good opportunity to also swap exhaust (£2-3k), intercoolers(£2-3k) and (£1500) remap. I'd say parts for the good stuff 650PS circa £12k via Marksi. I'd ask him what he'd want to run a 120k mile mezger at though first. He may perhaps say 530PS sweet spot and this is obviously much cheaper just a pair of turbos say £5k.

I have to be honest though with rusty oil lines, exhaust bolts etc etc this is a horrible job. If not done correctly you'll be doing it again. I've known where people have not set about the rusty oil lines properly put new ones on and still messed the job up. Having said that any good indy should be able to handle it.
