Thought I wanted a 911…
Discussion
I have convinced myself I need a 911 in my life, had a passenger ride in a 991 gt3 a couple of weeks ago and was really impressed (I’m currently in a 981 Spyder) but a GT3 is out of budget, after lots of research I’d decided that a Carrera T would do the job (with the option of a remap to perk it up if required).
Took one for a test drive today and was a little underwhelmed, it was a PDK which wouldn’t be my choice, but it sort of felt like the throttle was connected by a bit of elastic compared to the Spyder, not lots of turbo lag like my old 944, but very noticeable), the ride also felt sort of sharp compared to the Spyder (a bit like the T was on larger diameter wheels, which it isn’t).
Got back in the Spyder and it felt like a comfy pair of old slippers, am now wondering if the search should be for a 3.8, 991.1 carrera S.
Any thoughts? It was a rather short test drive, are my impressions accurate or should I try to blag a longer drive?

I’m 16k mikes into mine and don’t really recognise that. I drove my car back to back with a 991.1 50th anniversary recently and much preferred the way the T drives most of the time. The NA engine when you stretch its legs is quite something though. I also drove a GT3RS and a Speedster straight afterwards and although they are different league, I wasn’t disappointed in my comfy slippers car on the drive back home.
Was your test drive in sports mode? That would make a difference to the throttle.
The T is a good all round package, I do like mine.

I've owned a 981 Spyder, GT3 and a Carrera T and the Carrera T was my favourite - controversial I know. Jumping in from either the Spyder or a GT3 to a Carrera T you're never going to get it. The T needs a bit more time to fall for it. Such a fun revvy car for street driving and you don't have to be going crazy speeds to enjoy it unlike a GT3. Have a 718 Spyder now which is a keeper but I still miss my T. I'm personally not a fan of the electronic steering in the 991.1 era including the 981 Spyder although I don't think the P-Zero tyres helped.
Read good things about Litchfield.
You can take a Standard/T 991.2, or an S, to Litchfield and they will give you a menu of options to create a junior GT3, for a sensible budget.
Downside is the loss of the Porsche Warranty if that’s important, although you do get a Litchfield Warranty.
Driven several 991.2s with the 7-speed manual, and I thought it was excellent, and it would be my choice if I wanted the most rewarding 991.

That’s a good point Rob, I switched between modes, although kept dampers in sort, not sure which mode I was in when I noticed the throttle response
I keep the suspension in soft mode on the road. Think you need to have a longer play in one? Mind you… 981 Spyder is a lovely thing!Koln-RS said:

Interesting, I've recently driven a couple of 991s back to back with my 981. First up was a manual .2 GTS, it was modified so was rather loud and that did add to the experience, but I have to say I really enjoyed driving it.
Engine pulled well and the driving position is quite nice. Enjoyed the rear wheel steering but it just felt to me like the steering really has improved, just more connected, a little more feel and more natural. The manual box, felt as you would expect but best of all it had normal ratios.
Then I tried a 991.1 c4s, everything felt more familiar, more like an extension of mine but bigger, bit more power, heavier and more GT.
The steering though I struggled with it was an early build and it felt incredibly light and lifeless, I found it quite difficult to position accurately. Also I found the sound symposer was a bit overpowering.
It put me off the .1.generation, I'll stick with the 981 but I'm keen to try a later build carerra. Interestingly I think the rack is the same across all 3 cars.
