991.1 - Manual Gearbox
Discussion
I remember when the 7 speed first came out, it didn't get a great review. However, from memory, it was revised at some point - am I making it up?
I'm really digging the silhouette of the 991.1 a the moment and am thinking of picking one up. There's also the allure of it being the last N/A; just wondering if the PDK (which was great when I had one a few years back) would spoil the modern-classic notion I have in my head!

Shift was improved for 991.2 and is actually quite nice. Would assume it's easy enough to retrofit the .2 shift, but don't actually know for sure.
The really interesting question if whether you could upload the .2 steering map as that is miles better than the .1, too. .1 steering is not a highlight. More of an issue than gthe shift, I would say.

I’ve got a 991.1 and the gearshift is excellent. Like you, I liked the idea of having one of the last NA/manuals.
To be honest, the seventh gear is unnecessary, at best just like an old-fashioned overdrive. I quite like it as a bit of fun (like being able to turn the volume up to eleven) but not an especially useful addition. But the rest of the gearbox is lovely to use, works really well with the 3.4 engine, and is one of the nicest combinations I’ve had.
Combined with the rest of the package, makes this 911 my favourite yet (I’ve had 4 others over the years), and actually one of my favourite cars of any kind too. Certainly would recommend the manual, I think it’s excellent.

I’ve had three 991s
- 991.1 C4GTS (PDK)
- 991.2 GT3 Touring (6spd man)
- 991.2 C2 (7spd man)
Interestingly, I prefer the latter. I know the early versions were criticised, but the later ones were really good, and work nicely with the turbocharged engine.

i had a 991.1 c2s 7spd which was recently sold. replaced it with a 992 c2s 7spd. I got on with it very well and really enjoyed it. Had it for 6 years and felt very tuned into how it worked.
it could be a bit slow when its cold after a few days sat idle. but once upto temperature i've always found it fine, perhaps because i used it for 20k miles and got used to it or perhaps its nicely worn in.
definitely its a bit mechanical and you always feel like something is being moved out the way, but once you have learnt to completely ignore 7th unless on a motorway cruise then all is good. As already pointed out 7th is a bit of a gimmick unless on the flat at > 60mph, and even then dont expect any acceleration.

991.1 C2S manual here and love it. Searched for a long time to find the right colour and spec and jumped on it straightaway when it came up at DL Swindon. Mine is my daily. I've done 35,000 miles in just over two years including some decent overseas trips, Route Napoleon etc.
Takes a little while to get used to having 7 gears and where you are at in the box but yep - think of it as 6 speed with 7th as overdrive and all is good. Plus I get 30mpg + on a run in 7th !
Not ever felt particularly niggled by the steering, and I've had 8 Lotus with an Emira incoming. Sure maybe it could feel a little more connected but I never get out of the car after a decent blast and feel like I have been hampered by it or that it lets the overall package down in any big way.
The PSE on the naturally aspirated 3.8 is naughty.
Totally brilliant all rounder.
