Hello

Never posted in this forum and am not the most knowledgable Porsche prospective buyer so go easy etc!

I've owned some nice enough cars over the years, but keen to try a 911 from the more modern range (991 onwards). I don't want a 997 please, or a 996, I'm keen to go 991.2 onwards.

I've found a manual 991.2 GTS which looks SO good to me. The shape, the fabric seats and interior, the GTS pedigree etc.

But I keep reading on forums how it's best to get into the 'newer model' and how the 992 is phenomenally good, especially with infotainment, room etc. And there's a manual 992 Carrera S available used near enough to me...

The problem is I'm still seduced by the idea of owning a narrow body, GTS version of things. I need some proper data and lived experience to stop me flip flopping between the two or making a wrong decision.

So, has anyone experience of these ? Would I be making the silly choice going for 'old' tech?

Or is the 991.2 GTS a sweet spot not achieved in the 992 Carrera S?

Thank you in advance!

Admittedly both could well be sold by the time I make my decision, but the itch to drive and own a 911 isn't going to go away!

Hi,

I believe the 991.2 GTS is not a narrow body, I think it it the same width as a 992.

I prefer the 992, the electric steering will be more advanced, from a feeling point of view. Interior is more modern. But you must buy which ever you prefer.

People who have owned both will be better at advising.

Both are nice.

I’ve had both and would say the 991.2GTS was a better car to drive. Still quite modern for infotainment - Apple car play etc. but sounded great and went brilliantly.

992S was definitely more modern and a little more numb to drive but still a great car.

For me though if I had either car I’d want PDK these days. I’m spoilt by having a couple of manual cars but the 991.2GTS PDK box was very good.

Owned neither but driven both. I very nearly bought the 991.2 GTS but didn’t for reasons which weren’t anything to do with the car….I drove a 992 Carrera S and thought it felt more of a GT than a Sports car….a bit dull if you aren’t pushing itt if I am honest.

Pic shows both cars that interest you from the rear…the 992s with its 8 speed pdk definitely faster of the mark than my GTS. Newer cars always better they say but you need to drive them both and choose what’s suits you best. I’ve only had the GTS 18 months but it will be with me for a few years yet.

I’ve owned a PDK RWD 991.2 GTS (apologies for the number of acronyms laugh) for a little over a year now. It’s used as a daily and is currently my only car.

Simply put, it’s a mighty impressive thing. Feels special every time I drive it, has plenty of room for things and is blisteringly quick.

While I haven’t driven a 992 Carrera S, I’ve yet to wonder if it’s worth the upgrade. As mentioned, the tech in the 991.2 is still relatively modern and has all the key features including CarPlay. To my eyes, the 991.2 cabin hasn’t dated at all - familiar yes, dated no.

While this isn’t a thorough comparison, these were my initial thoughts when reading through this.

More than happy to answer questions and post pics of the car when you get it!

Had a Carrera 4 991.2 GTS with PDK for 2 months now.

Did have the choice of a 992 for same money but spec was low.

Having had nothing to compare it to before, still got an S2000 and an E class, I still smile every time I open the garage.

A 911 has been a lifetime dream for me , so I am never going to see bad in any of them.

We wanted a cabriolet and went with the colour and spec we preferred, front axle lift finally swayed it

I like both but I always prefer buying last of the old gen rather than first of the new gen. The 991.2 Carrera GTS will be relatively glitch free compared to an early 992. However if money no object I'd happily buy a new 992 now its been around a few years. In fact my dealer tells me best to get a new order in now for a 992 gen 2 wink

Thanks all so much! Really appreciate as ever the balanced views and the personal insights

I’ll be back, and looking to test drive the two options next week and will come back with pics as a PP said depending on where I land with it

Interested to see how you get on. I was having a similar conundrum in my head and on AT the other day.

I quite like the 992 interior, minus the PDK stick, and I dislike alcantara (finding a leather GTS makes the already small pool, very small indeed), and with same power outputs that'd point me to the 992S. However, there's just something special about the GTS. Silly how 3 letters can cause such a dilemma laugh

Let us know how the test drives go.

I've owned both. In my opinion the 992 is better in every way.

Sounds like you might like mine - it has the Sport-Tex interior, leather trim and the leather steering column casing. I admire the first owner for going against the crowd!

Bought a 991.2 GTS, manual no sunroof thinking it would be a keeper. Was good but expected better, so bought a 992 4S cabriolet. The GTS was not special enough to overcome the fact that the newer car is better all round - handling, steering, interior, tech etc.

I've not driven the 991 GTS but have had a go in both coupe and cab 992 C4S. Its some car congrats. Just the door handles in and out and user interface with PCM a little annoying for a dinosaur like me but I'm sure you'd get used to them. Go like a scolded cat.

You went from driver's car to, well er a cab with 4 wheel drive. So you moved to a totally different type of proposition which is more suited to you. Fair enough, but saying the steering is better on the cab may mean you're not looking for a sports car type experience.

I had a 991.2 GTS briefly and then a 992 S for a bit longer. They are both great cars. Objectively the 992 is better, comfort, detail design, gearbox, refinement (though it's still quite wearying on a long motorway drive compared to competitors). 991.2 GTS felt more special, more fun, and more flawed, all at once. I guess it depends what you want out of a car,

For me the 992 was brilliant but just a bit too perfect, a bit numb as someone said. 1.2 GTS more alive. Still pretty modern.
