911 991.2 Reliability
Discussion
Looking at purchasing a 911 991.2 Carrera or Carrera S and been reading about the turbo failures on these. Seems every group I go into there on about this problem, is it every single car effected by this issue?
The cars I’m looking at will either have the Porsche warranty or I’ll get Porsche to carry out the health check and then put one on myself from Porsche.
What I don’t want is to buy the car and have to spend 1000’s on repair bills and it being constantly in the garage.
Are they that bad for reliability?
Many thanks

Mine's been fine, others haven't. Get a warranty from Porsche and drive it as it's really, really good. It won't be constantly in the garage if it goes it'll be in once and won't cost you a penny.
All cars have issues so factor that in or get an LC500 V8 and it'll run forever without missing a beat.

Seems to be a lot to be fair, and early 992 as well. I run a 991.T but always with Porsche Warranty that can run to 2033. Be careful buying one without warranty, as you have to wait 90 days ownership before applying for the 111 Check/Warranty Extension. Unless the previous owner extends for you and you reimburse, that 90 period could be a very worrying time with this known problem, I have not heard of someone getting caught here, but I m sure someone has. Love my T, but never without Porsche Warranty intact. Think Litchfield are very knowledgeable about the causes and remedies, probably worth a call for guidance.
No issue in 8 years, so hard to call my car unreliable. I will of course have a cheque ready for a big bill at some point in the next 8 years, but the combination of reliability and low depreciation so far has meant that I’m well ahead of the game financially on this one.
Others cars that I have not so good sadly!

It's a great car (991.2 4 GTS in my case) but I have had issues with the turbo and the associated works (I can't remember what else they needed to do). The car was with the dealer for an unbelievable five months due to lack of parts availability! Apparently that was because it was a GTS-specific part, so shouldn't be so bad for an S or standard Carrera.
In fairness, they were good about it - it was under warranty and I had a courtesy car - but it left a bitter taste. It has just thrown an PADM fault and needs to go back in now. Warranty vital I would say. Fantastic car. Wonderful at everything. I tested some other marques, including some much more expensive cars, and thought the GTS was just right. However, it is testing my patience as I've only had it a year and it's a bit galling when you get these issues, look online and they appear "common". I have friends with Ferraris who have less issues. My 996.2 GT3 was faultless by comparison but obviously had much less to go wrong. I think with a warranty, it still offers a huge amount for the cost and for ongoing running costs (i.e. two year servicing).

I have a 991.2 C2S with Powerkit (ie engine wise is de facto a GTS).
As usually someone considering a 991.2 is also considering a 991.1, let me give you my 2cts.
I tested also 991.1 C2S before buying and whereas the noise on those was fantastic, I think there are certain improvements on the 991.2 that make it very worth it.
From a day to day perspective, the turbos give a (linear) low down torque that the NA cannot match. The steering feel is, in my view, substantially improved. Mine has rear steering which makes the car feel smaller in town and much sharper in spirited driving. There are new design features which to me make the car feel substantially more modern (DRL, back lights, PDLS+ in my case, etc). Finally, apple car play - may sound stupid but it allows me to use the car day to day without worrying about that teams meeting that will start while I am still on my way from the school, get Waze and other apps without faffing with 3rd party hw and loose warranty, etc.
It’s not perfect though - no car is I suspect. See my posts in another thread- just got the car back from Porsche and it was not terrible (just spark plugs and what not but if it wasn’t for the warranty I would be paying 1.500 just for that!!). There were also other bits and pieces which kindly Porsche was very accommodating at solving under warranty - which I was surprised: window switches, noisy cabrio mechanism, squeaks in bad tarmac, etc).
So, in a nutshell: to me, a better product compared to the 991.1 but requires Porsche Warranty which is; to me, the key for low total ownership costs.

991.2 GTS for 5 years and 26k miles. Only issue has been a broken bit of plastic on a window switch and a replacement engine lid strut x2. Everything else has been regular wear and tear on the consumables, plus routine servicing with an extra oil change every non official service year.
I drive it hard on track and euro tours. It is my view that these engines benefit from regular hard use and ALWAY let them idle for a few moments when the engine is hot. You only ever hear about the failures rather than the vast majority of cars that go on without a hiccup. The dot two is a terrific engine and the 991 package as whole is lovely model of modern of 911 before it all went a tad digital with the 992.
Do your research, find a good one and im sure you'll be very happy.
