I’m getting a bit desperate here and wonder whether anyone can give me some advice, please?

I have a 57 plate Cayman S that wouldn’t start after being sat for a week (I know but please read on! – two weeks have passed since then). There’s nothing when I turn the ignition (expect maybe a whirring noise afterwards) – the engine doesn’t even attempt to turn over but I have power everywhere else. Thought it was the battery first of all, so initially I bunged mine on a charge-o-mat but it still wouldn’t start even though the battery was reading good (both on the charge-o-mat and mutimeter (showed around 80% of optimum charge).

I then had a Porsche trained mobile mechanic come and look at it, who thought it could still be the battery or the starter motor but didn’t really give me a comprehensive answer. In his defence, the car is in an underground car park and his high top transit wouldn’t fit under the barrier, so it was a bit tricky for him to properly diagnose and have access to all his kit etc.

I purchased a new battery (Bosch S4 80ah) and fitted it, but same problem. Before I chuck money at a starter motor, does this sound a reasonable next step? The clutch switch and ignition switches both seem OK, from what I can gather. Anything else it could be?

If a starter motor is the next step, could anyone recommend a trusted mobile mechanic in the London area (I live in East London)? As I can’t start the car I can’t drive it anywhere to have it checked over and access makes recovery a bit of a nightmare (plus that will be costly). The guy above might be able to do the job but he’s quite hard to pin down and I really need the car to be back on the road in just over a weeks time.

TIA,
Carl

If a Porsche trained mechanic can't diagnose it when stood in front of it then it's probably unlikely that anyone is going to be able to do it over the internet.

However, this is PH ...

What does it do, exactly, when you try to start it? Can you hear anything going on? When the starter motor failed on my 964 you could still hear it spinning faintly (it just wasn't engaging)

Could you try push / bump starting it?

Alternatively join the AA / RAC etc and get them to tow it.

Thanks. I wasn't expecting anyone to diagnose it over the internet, I was just chewing the cud that's all.

I'm a little deaf (literally) but the only thing my girlfriend and I can hear is a whirring noise after the ignition is engaged, otherwise nothing. Same before and after the new battery change.

I spoke to Porsche in Leeds earlier as I've had a lot of work done there in the past and they've suggested to have a closer look at the clutch / ignition switch, which may still be faulty.

As I said, access is limited to the underground car park and there's a ramp going out, so pushing it out / bump starting isn't an option. If I need to go down the AA / RAC route I will do, but I wanted to attempt to get it sorted in situe if at all possible.

Thanks again for the response.
