Boxster and Cayman being renamed 718

This report claims the 718 name previously mooted for the entry-level Porsche is now being used for the Boxster/Cayman, gathering the range under a single umbrella, much like the 911.

Any thoughts? IMHO anything reported by Georg Kacher needs to be taken with a medically unsound heaping of salt, this included.

Agreed as to the brand equity in the individual names, though it's within the realm of possibility that they'll simply prefix the current names with 718. I refer you to the badge soup affixed to the rear of the 991 GTS variants as circumstantial evidence.

As for them being ghastly contraptions, I won't be a Luddite about changes to the Boxster/Cayman formula. Unlike the 911, there is little or no history associated with the cars for me, and they're no more immune to the tides of change than any other modern car. I personally won't buy a turbo, but that doesn't mean I don't see the need to move to one. Besides, make the 4-pot sound like an early Impreza Turbo and I won't be complaining.

Amen to that. I understand why Porsche would do this. But I dont like it one bit.

Frankly I couldn't care what its called. I care only for a flat six and a manual gearbox. Remove those options for me and Ill be looking elsewhere at other brands.

I fear this downsizing is going too far now even if it is necessary. Said it before in other threads but perhaps its time I moved onto another hobby like bee keeping.

718 has already been used so I would be amazed if they used it now for the Boxster/Cayman. Having said that they did do an RS60 version of the Boxster.
