GT4 = BMW 1M Coupe?
Discussion
so - skunk works cars...
Both has suspension stolen from the big brother model (1M coupe has M3 underpinnings), an engine from a more normal model and then a production run that whilst lowish in numbers, not so low as to make it unobtainable...
Result with the 1M? Best M car for a while and the best residuals of any recent M car (the CSL was the last one that has defied normal trends).
This is the way I view the GT4 - Porsche doing skunk works stuff and all the better for it...

Yeah, a good comparison. As the years roll by, i don't think the Cayman GT4 will ever be lusted for in the same way as a 911 will be, but i think it will hold it's price well in the same vein as as the 1M.
It particularly helps if a car isn't directly replaced. I remember when i had a VX220 i sold it for what i paid for two years later. This was a good 5 years ago and i reckon i'd have to spend the same again today!
The stricter things like emissions and safety gets, the more the GT4 will be a unique proposition in our modern world!

I think the GT4 will hold it's value reasonably well but I don't expect it to appreciate like some 911s did. That's ok, I'm buying the car to drive it and not as an investment. Hopefully it will be a big sales success so other manufacturers wake up and see that the enthusiast market is not dead yet.
I could definitely see myself in a BMW M2 CSL 2-3 years from now. 450 hp, front engine, manual, rwd, e-diff, stripped to 1350 kg with composite roof and panels? Yes please...
It just makes me giggle to constantly hear opinions on residual values. It's mostly irrelevant. If you can afford to buy a Porsche you should not get your knickers in a twist about what the thing is worth 3,4,5,7 years down the track.
Drive it to enjoy it for yourself now, not for what it can pay you back later.

Given that the biggest cost of car ownership is depreciation, residuals are very important - at least to those of us for whom the Porsche is a significant expense. It might, for example, cost you less to own a GT4 than an S. Drive it to enjoy it for yourself now, not for what it can pay you back later.

I don't disagree - fact is M cars are more like normal cars as that's what they are based on, but the 1M is a coveted car and has been since it was launched. The point I was making was not to compare them as cars, but as concepts - using existing rather than bespoke parts to create the M car or GT car.The GT4 will be on another level compared to the 1M I'm sure of it - but the method to get there isn't that different.
Just a bit of fun....
