i'm on my 3rd boxster at the moment with no previous problems apart from a clutch went on a 987 3.2 at 23k. i've had two 3.2's and have had a 2008 3.4 s for the last 5 years. she is faultless as far as i know and only done 23k (april to october driving) now i know this is old ground for most of you but i have only recently heard of the IMS & BORE SCORING issues.(never been on a forum b4)! have i really anything to be concerned about? I certainly don't have 8K for a rebuild!! i.e. can you get this bearing upgraded etc. any advice welcome. thanks ;-)

Joining a forum was your biggest mistake and once you have joined it's hard to leave, but like me and many others you willl now have paranoia and everytime you drive your car you will be worried about the engine letting go and it just takes the enjoyment out of it, that's whats happened to me anyway.

You would be very very unlikely to have any major fault, if you can afford it get the porsche insurance just in case, I have this and it's worth every penny, pushing hard you know that if it goes bang you have new engine coming.

Relax, enjoy the car and stay on-top of the maintenance, warm the car up carefully before driving hard, avoid big throttle openings at low engine speeds and give it a chance to cool down after a brisk drive and you can mitigate the risk. The advice I have given I would use on any engine regardless.

You have had the car for the last 5 years with no problems, so I wouldn't worry too much, just enjoy the car mate.

The ims issue isnt really an issue on post 2006 cars, bore score effects 3.4 caymans quite a bit but for some reason hardly any 3.4 boxsters according to hartech who do most of the rebuilds. In view of this stop worrying and go back to enjoying your car!!

In that case you should be more concerned about bits breaking because you're not driving it enough - garage queen and all that. You need to do precisely 1,000 miles a month, apportioned between 4 250 mile drives to avoid any short journeys (but make it 8 * 125 mile drives if you start to notice you're starting to get disc corrosion and in which case brake hard to scrub the discs but not so hard that you warp them etc, etc.)

Seriously, stop worrying!
