Perhaps this side of things has been reported before, but worth saying again perhaps. I've just sold my 2005 3.2 S. The engine did not melt, go bang or try to destroy itself in any way over two years of daily use and normal care and servicing. It was a total joy to own and drive and let me down only once when the AOS let go - lots of smoke, lots of panic, but only £300 to fix. New tyres as expected and 2(!) broken coil springs. That's it. Great car, and I will have another without doubt... And it sold 2 days after placing the add!

I've had my Cayman 5 years and it has not exploded. All that's happened beyond regular maintenance is that the Sound Package Plus amplifier packed in. Which is one of those special known issues that Porsche do fk all about.

I have to add some balance to this topic. It's the law you know.

I had my Cayman for 7 years. It ate it's engine at 5 years and 60k miles and despite having a full OPC service history, because it was out of warranty, I had to pay for all of it. I then renewed the warranty and over the next years that covered the replacement of the catalytic converter, a caliper and a starter motor. It did not cover most of the front suspension linkage that I had to replace (track rods, coffin arms, rear link arms etc) that had "worn out" due to me using it on normal roads. I was forced to buy their inferior battery, fit inferior N rated tyres, pay their ridiculous service prices and constantly battle with them to stop them unnecessarily changing chargeable parts. They will never get another penny of my money.

There. The world is now back in balance.

I think many owners who have had a good experience like myself simply can't be bothered anymore to discuss the cars positive aspects with the doom mongers. It wouldn't be so bad if posters spoke from first hand experience of good and bad experiences but it seems many just feel obligated, as if internet sheep, to repeat the same things over and over and then myth just becomes fact. I couldn't care less, my caymans great!

I like what the doom mongers do to prices. They cause a nice reduction in the price of the "dodgy" cars and allow me to buy one nice and cheaply. I had a 996 Carrera 2 with 120 000 on the clock, before the current Gen 1 Cayman 2.7 and they both cost me considerably less than the "reliable" versions.

Long live the doom mongers!

If you are sensible, it need not be a massively expensive car to run. But it can bite you in the arse if you're not careful. As with all things these days, the internet is your friend. though personally I wouldn't mind the 2.7 prices going up a little... They're a bit too cheap at the moment and when it finally comes time to move it on, I wouldn't mind a little money for it frown

Ha! Well said - narrow bodied 996 c2 with pse never looked so tempting! long may it continue. In fact I certainly remember a similar situation when I was looking for an air cooled 911 a good few years ago. Most if not ALL cars had either had or needed a top end rebuild at around £4k (which is probably about the same cost as some serious hartech shenanigans on your expired m96/97 these days, inflation adjusted?) hardly bullet proof as we're led to believe...

over the last 10 years i've had 3 boxsters an X reg 3.2 a '55 plate 3.2 and an '08 3.4 all have been problem free, fantastic cars to own and drive! Either i am one lucky b@stard or the doom mongers thrive on here. shout
