I recently had my oil separator changed as the previous one failed and mode no noise at all. I have recently has a squeaky/squeeling noise, like a belt slipping. Not sure what it is but all belts are in good order and everything is greased up. It makes the noise when turning off but comes and goes and it is not rev. related. Any ideas?

I had a similar squeaking issue in my old 997, it was intermittent and would start randomly. I was told by technician that water can get trapped in parts of the engine causing no real damage aside from squeaking (the car was kept outside) I know this would be less likely on a mid-engine car because they are sealed away but still possible I would imagine. I rented a garage and the squeaking seemed to stop after a couple of months. Is your car kept outside?

thank you for your post. Yes the car is kept outside after being garaged for the last 6 years, it has also been really wet. I am unsure though about water causing the issue, it isn't rev related and some days it is constant, others it is hardly present, we have had a dry spell and yesterday it was squeaking a lot. Mystery to me

HI Matty, this happened to my 986 a few weeks back. It was very odd, I would have bet anything on it being a belt as it sounded exactly like a squealing fan belt. It was also intermittent it was indeed the AOS. Cheap fix but get it done I have read it can suck oil into the spark plugs...

Cheers

Thanks Stu, I have booked it in with Cridfords for next week and they have an AOS on shelf. I actually had that changed abut a year ago so it may have failed. It hasn't affected the performance at all....

No Problem Matty, odd you only changed it a year ago they seem to usually go around the 100,000 mile mark, as you say could be a duffer. Good luck with it.

Edit - meant to say they usually last a 100,000 miles from what I have read. that's usually when they go, my car has just hit 94 and bang needed an AOS.

Mine ad it changed at 104,000 that is why I didn't think it would be that but every symptom seems to suggest it......

Hi Matty, something for you to try, have the engine running and try to remove oil filler cap, If you cannot remove it then AOS collapsed, should come of easy then with engine turned of.

I had a customers car with very loud whistle and it was air noise from being sucked through crankseal.

Thank for all the help. It is booked in now but I will try and remove the cap when idling, strange how AOS was replaced a short while ago and it may be faulty so soon afterwards...................
