987.2 Should I consider one?
Discussion
Am a very happy owner of a Sports Design Edition 1 Cayman 987.1. It has done 34k miles and is as sweet as a car could be. I bought it because I fell in love with the shape and knew (after I had followed one for six days of 'spirited' driving in Spain two years ago) that it could perform at least as well as my TVR Chimaera and for the purposes of pure handling joy, exceeded the Chim by eons!
So, why change one might ask? It is simply the bore scoring thing really. It may never happen, but it could. If it did then there is a pretty penny to pay just to keep it, right?
If I could go to the R then I would but wonder if I should just get a Gen 2 and be done with the worry. I think it will sell fairly easily as it is in pretty much mint condition and still has the suitcase and bits therein from when it was first delivered. All unused. It also has a number plate that matches the car (if one likes that sort of thing).
Main question is really whether the Gen 2 cars are free from the sort of problems that the 987.1 has. Is there an IMS or bore scoring issues (or any other issues for that matter!) or is the 987.2 bombproof?
FWIW, I am unlikely to move forward to an even later version of the Cayman as it seems to have morphed into a 911 and has lost the shapely hips on the rear end. Why the f*** did Porsche do that?! Of course, that comment will become null and void if I can ever afford myself a GT4. All bets are off then!
Thanks for any feedback. JM

I went from 987.1 caymanS to a 987.2 spyder(which is basically the same 320hp engine as in 987.2 caymanS) and would recommend the change!no ims to worry about and bore scoring does not appear to be a problem although not ruled out as cars approach 100k+ miles, the engine is very sweet and free revving.
If I were not getting a gt4 I would consider a 987.2cs with no pasm and standard 18" wheels!imo the caymanR is not worth the £10k+ premium over the standard car unless you are a track day warrior although prices seem to be slipping!

I can't help you with the gen 1 to 2 comparison but I picked my gen 2 S up a week ago and am loving it, despite a little early hiccup. I' know some have said that the ride is better on the gen 2, again I can't help with the comparison but mine has 19's and PASM and I think it's great, firm but never crashy. I personally went for the gen 2 purely for the, hopefully, increased reliability.
