I am soon looking at trading my M3 in for a 981 Cayman and just wondered as it would be my every day car would for the same budget a Cayman R be too extreme as an every day machine?

If you want a car that is tactile and full of feedback go for the R. If you prefer your creature comforts and like the more modern driver aids then the 981 would be more suitable. Ultimately, the R is perfectly ok for everyday use and will also depreciate far less than a 981.

I did think the R would hold its money better, I surpose I just need to try one.

Thanks

and a Diff + Porsche also did give it more camber than the run of the mill cars.

Go and drive the 981. Take it from me - they are astounding cars. This latest generation of Boxster/Cayman is recognised by many as being "one of the world's best sportscars at any price".

IF you wan ta car which just feels like a GOlf ;-)

Even the GT4 is a easy to use car now(bar ground clearance) and rides like a dream, the newer normal cars are very dull imo hence why the OP need to work out what sort of drive he wants.

And larger exhaust manifold and aero kit, unique headlamps and will hold its price better than a run of the mill "S" model yuck

Given that the Golf R finished above a Renault Megane Trophy and McLaren 650s in the Evo 2014 COTY results, is that really so bad? You make it sound as if a decent ride and everyday useability is a bad thing. Colin Chapman might disagree.

Colin Chapman is rotating in is grave at 7200 rpm because you mentioned him in the same posting as the Golf R. laugh

That seems like an image/brand thing. If Ford/Renault/Mazda/VW/Audi produce better drivers cars (occasionally) than BMW/Mercedes/Porsche then acknowledge it! It may be unpalatable to Porsche/lamborghini/Ferrari/Maserati - but it is (if the motoring press are at all to be believed) just so on occasion. Why shouldn't it be? VW group share info and there will be occasions when one part of the empire gets it right - and another gets it wrong.

yes I went to buy a Golf at the week end and had a 30 minute test drive it was so dull it was crazy, hence my winter hack will be a Megane CUP

Comparing the 2 cars on paper is pointless, stats and spec list do not reflect reality.

As said, go and drive them and see what you thnk. I find there is a huge difference just for example between my 986 and my R in terms of comfort and everyday drivability, driving the R down the bumpy country lanes at 6am is not very plesant, but the Boxster is much less jiggly.

I know what you mean. I had a Golf R as a courtesy car a little while ago and it was fun for about the first 20 miles and after that it had nothing more to offer. Nice winter hack by the way.

I agree, I think it's a generational thing too.

I picked up a few hundred quid snotter yesterday (1.8 Ford Focus) for my other half to drive whilst waiting for a new compnay car, its 15 years old. After 2 hours of driving it home I decided I actually enjoyed driving it more than I do her new A4, and i'm not saying this for effect, I genuinely did.

To be fair the 981 is not anywhere near as bad in the steering department as an Audi A4 - you still get something of worth from a new Porsche.
