Cayman R - track prep
Discussion
Just wondering what (cold) tyre pressures you guys run in the R on track? Having only used air-cooled pork on track the last 10yrs or so, this is a new world to me! No idea how these skinny profile tyres react under that intensity so whats safe/optimal hot pressure to allow them to get to?
I am still running Goodyear Eagle F1's, are they any good on track? Intend to go for Michelin Pilot sports next (or whatevers best recommended).
Another question:- Tow eyes,do the marshalls give you grief for only having one? I know they usually ask where the front and rear tow points are on your way out onto track. It only takes a minute to swap it front to rear but are they happy with that or do I need to buy a another one?

Tricky question as a road car on stock geo on F1 tyres oem pads would drive me to do 2 laps and give up.
As for cold pressures, that's what Porsche say in the book, NEVER let air out of cold tyres then track.
Go out do 4 laps , come in and let some psi out, prob quite a lot as you will get massive heat going on, hence why I would. Not bother tracking it fully stock car.
Spend the money on pads and a nice geo and go drive EVo triangle :-)

Well its Bedford autodrome so I wouldn't call it an official track day, just somewhere I can really stretch the legs of the R and put it through its paces and keep my license
Cant believe it will be as bad as you predict but then I am used to sticky R rubber and semi-race pads so running a stock setup after all these years may be a shock to the system!

I've never had any problems using one towing eye.
If you aim for around mid 30's hot for your tyre pressures and an absolute maximum of 38, that should give you about optimum. As already said, though, do a handful of laps with them set at road pressures (cold) before bleeding any air out.
Michelin Pilot Super Sports are about the best compromise between road and track tyres right now.

The problem I have is that the tyres then get cold between sessions and it's all over the place until the tyres heat up again.
This is obviously quite bad — but can't see any way around it unless I used tyre blankets
or pump them back up again, drive around, come in and let them down again.

If you fit the tow eye remember, to remove the blank/plug just push it at the bottom and the top pops out. I've seen loads of people trying to lever them out with a screwdriver

And remember to remove it completely, otherwise if it breaks off you will only be able to buy a replacement in primer ...
As an aside, I generally let 5 lbs out cold and then take care not to hit curbs whilst warming up.
I often end up taking around 10lbs out in the dry.
At the end of the trackday I put 10 lbs in all round and don't worry about tyre pressures until they are cold the following morning.
I aim to run at 30lbs all around, although the PSCup2's seemed to work well at up to 32 and started to become noticeably loose at around 35lbs all round.

My experience is similar to many on here, I run the tyres at between 28 and 30 hot. I do however swap the 19 inch wheels for 18's with Kumho V70 tyres in med compound.
My car is a PDK and I run it in standard trim (although I have PCCB's). I ran 250 miles at Donington in one day in the summer and the car never missed a beat. Absolutely terrific car for circuit use.

Hey Mark, are you going to Bedford this Saturday? I'm up there with my GTS and a fellow PH member and his R. Make sure you say hello!

Hi yes I am ! will definitely come and say hello
Good to hear a couple of Cayman PH'ers are going along. I will be billy-no-mates on the day so good to have someone to chat too.
Thanks for the info on the tyres chaps. Have found the Eagles a bit slippery in the wet so I am hoping for a dry-ish track! Will probably wear these out and get some Michelins next.

Don't worry, you won't be lonely - we'll even drag you along to lunch, you really don't want to eat the food on site :-)

Looks like it's going to be wet tomorrow, but Bedford can be fun in the wet too.

I feel like bringing my R along just to get some photos of it next to other ones Haha.
I'm only booked on in my Clio but will be good to see some other Rs out there!

You know you want to :-)
Good day yesterday, had a lot of fun in the R and was loving the handling, sound and pace of it. Not much was able to keep with it so did lots of overtaking. Weather held out (ish) until lunchtime then it rained constantly and heavier but still got some laps splashing in the puddles.
Big thanks to Trotmant and Reyad? (hope I spelt that right) for being good company and enjoyed the pub lunch break
Cheers.
