Casual Boxing Day Autotrader browsing, but I'm thinking of changing the car and this one has piqued my interest so... 5000 mile Cayman S

Missing any "must haves"? Anyone know of any "history" (I'm wondering how it's escaped the OPC network)? Any other comments - "wait for the new 2 litre's" etc etc.

Thanks

Looks good, the lack of Sports Chrono might be a resale issue...

Don't wait for the gen 2.
Check the dealer's rep- non Porsche specialist?
Phone them up and ask all the right questions (try and find previous owner and get in touch with them).
Go and inspect/ test drive.
If all the above are positive and you like it, buy the car.
Don't worry about the Sports Chrono.

Looks lovely to me, also missing PASM & PSE but not the end of the world.

As already said, it looks to be a lovely example. Mileage and colour are in its favour and although its relatively
low on options, this is not really an issue if the rest of the car is appealing.

No PCM or bluetooth and basic sound system (pretty naff it is said) is one reason price is below average. (Saves approx £3000 on original price - but probably depresses secondhand value even more). Others are keen on 20" wheels, sports exhaust and sports chrono - personally I'm not - but it's a certainly a negotiating position to take with the salesman. I'd check on the warranty situation - the 3rd year of the warranty (it's insurance backed) with the new car isn't, I believe, transferable. Don't let that put you off if you are happy with the spec and can negotiate a good deal.

No PSE and no SC. Huge miss especially when the car is PDK....

The other missing specs are more subjective, but I would say the above are a must

I would completely disagree - HATE PSE and SC does nothing for me - just shows how subjective this is.

That a monster price for a 2 year old car IMO. Might as well spend a bit more money and buy a new one with three year warranty.

And who the hell wants a grey sportscar? (Subjective I know)

Grey interior...... Massive put off for me and with out SC, PASM etc etc.... Wouldn't be the car for me!

The only thing in its favour is the very low milage but when you've added 10-15k miles it will be hard to shift given the interior and lack of spec compared to the majority of others out there!

Just my opinion of course!

Looking at the classifieds, you can get a fully loaded car of that age, for about £46-£47k, albeit with perhaps double the mileage? That's a good £15-20k off list plus options and a bit more of a buyers bargain IMHO?

I agree. PASM and 14 way seats are far more useful to me. I would want Sat Nav in any car I buy.

Looking for a Cayman recently I found a UK launch Cayman S with 13k miles for £41k. Ran it through the configurator and it came out at £73k!

However, it was brown so I walked away.

I have sat nav on my 987.2 and have never used it, Waze and TomTom with HD traffic is much quicker/easier to use with far better traffic avoidance from my experience. I've never got on with any built in sat nav. For me I wouldn't buy a car without proper xenons (not the basic 981 candle xenons). Just shows you there is probably no 'typical' buyer or spec, so I'd advise just going with the spec you like/want and enjoy your purchase. Happy hunting smile

Exactly this. When folk rattle on about "essential options" I have a little smile, I don't see any 981's at the scrappy that were so lowly specced they couldn't sell! Buy the car for you and no-one else. Likewise I don't value any inbuilt sat nav regardless of car- total waste of money imo but it is just that, an opinion.

Out of interest, do Waze and TomTom mute the car stereo when giving voice commands, as the built in one does? That's the thing I found lacking when using Google Nav on my phone a few years back.

Having had Xenons on my E46 since 2004 and then my TTS last year I was a little worried about the halogens on my 981, but I've not given it a second's though when driving at night. They seem perfectly adequate, if not giving such a white light.

Not sure about the muting, I'm a little odd in that I never have the stereo on either biggrin I'm not sure if PCM does Bluetooth audio or not? I'll try and have a go when I get a minute. I've put the Osram night breakers (apparently the best around) in the other halves Mini and, pardon the pun, it's night and day between them and the Cayman. I've also updated the standard HID bulbs to Osram night breaker unlimited Xenarc and they are superb. I think the 981 has 'low wattage' (25w?) xenons as standard, hence not needing the washers as regulation demand, that kicks in at 35w and above I think. So the standard 981 lights will be better than standard 987 versions. Like a few of have said I think any spec of Cayman will sell. You'll get people like me who use it as a daily driver so wanted PASM, cruise, climate and xenons. If it were to be a wekend fun car a 'poverty' spec would do me just fine smile

Thanks for all the replies and opinions. I think the interesting interior and the heated/ventilated seats caught my attention :-), but when I look beyond that, the spec is a little basic. I'll keep an eye out and maybe do a bit of digging about the next gen one.

If the ventilated option is the same mechanicals as in the 987 I didnt find them very effective compared to ventilated seats ive had on Jaguar and others
