I will be replacing the battery on my Boxster S 987 and have read different suggestions: 1. turn the ignition on and then off and then remove the neg terminal first or 2. turn the ignition key to position 1 and leave it in that position and then remove the neg terminal.

Any suggestions as to which is the correct procedure to minimise problems.

On my 997 (2006 year) I did version 2 as you describe it. This was advised to me by my Porsche specialist in order to avoid the alarm going off. It has worked no problem for me on a number of occasions last year when I wasn't using the car much and disconnected the battery to save it going flat.

Key to pos 1 as the alarm needs to see the transponder on power up otherwise it goes off..

I have a 986, handbook says just replace battery, no special procedure, Boxa.net says key in pos 1, it's a nightmare! Easiest way is to rig up a slave battery to the terminals so that there is always a 12 volt supply . That way you can be certain there wont be any alarm problems!

On the 986 the cigar lighter is permanent live so that can be used during a battery change.

I recently replaced the battery on my 987 after all of the elctricity leaked out.

I did it in a bit of a rush as it was not a job I wanted to be doing in the rain and on the everning before going back to work after christmas...

Didnt do anything special - old battery out, new one in, with the keys in my back pocket. Only issues was a TC failure, but that sounds pretty common and fixes itself after a bit of driving (I think it has to do with the car having to relearn where the wheels are when you go from lock to lock)

If you are nervous, a battery saver plugged in while you swap the new one in will stop any faults, but I didn't bother and nothing went wrong.

On a 986/996 you need to have the ignition turned on to stop the alarm from being triggered when you disconect the battery (same if you unplug the alarm control unit).

On 987/997 you dont need to have the ignition turned on .After reconecting the battery you will get a psm failure warning come up , just drive the car over 6mph and it will clear and rember its old settings.

This is for the steering angle sensor , it wont relearn but just re use its old settings.

and run the windows down to their stops and back up again to reset.
