Just seen this on Twitter - 911R on the right but it looks like a "duck face" Cayman 718 on the left?

Yes, looks like it. Should be a very impressive choice as a daily driver if you can see past the 4-cylinder.

Oh and by the way:

A 2017 718 Boxster S with the PDK dual-clutch automatic transmission, Sport Chrono package, (0.4-inch lower) PASM adaptive suspension, and its 2.5-liter engine circled the Nordschleife in 7 minutes, 42 seconds—an absurd 16 seconds quicker than an identically equipped 2016 Boxster S, five seconds quicker than the six-cylinder Boxster Spyder, and just two seconds shy of the track-focused Cayman GT4.

GT Porsche reckon it's a Boxster 718 under the cover, but as that model's been released why cover it?

As the suggestion is that the base car is now the Cayman in the next gen, I wonder what the power is likely to be? Exactly the same as the Boxster, and you've got a slower flagship, which would be odd.

It'll be the same, unlike previously when the Boxster supposedly had less. That would tie in with the move to 718 branding, with one (Boxster) just being an open top version of the other (Cayman).

Cayman and Boxster names will be dropped in the future is my guess.

Yes, it seems that the marketing department decided to keep the "Boxster" and "Cayman" names for this transitional model so the new car will be viewed as the direct successor of the old ones.
Renaming them to 718 Coupe and 718 Cabriolet right away could have caused some confusion, leading people to thing this is an inferior product positioned below the old cars (4 vs 6 cylinders).
I do think the future naming and pricing will mimic that of the 911 and most other cars for that matter: equal power, open top costs extra.

By the way I have just learned that the 718 OEM tyre is the new Pilot Sport 4 which is a slightly more road focused version of the Pilot Super Sport. This means that a 718 Boxster S would already be faster around the 'ring than the GT4, assuming equal rubber.

Only it's not. It's been round and was 2s slower.

Still pretty bloody impressive.

Zoom in on the left hand car and does it look like it's been photoshopped at the rear quarter to remove a spoiler or am I imagining it? Some kind of hoax or wind up maybe?

There is something a bit odd at the back of that one.

The pic is sourced from porsche Twitter isn't it?

It does seem to be on their Twitter feed and there's definitely something "off" about the rear of the car on the left but it's hard to tell exactly what. Could be photoshopped, or could be something under the cover, or both. Hard to tell. Not long to wait, I suppose!

Refer to the 911R @ Geneva thread:

It's just a photo shopped image of last year's GT3 RS & GT4 presentation. Both cars have had spoilers photo-shopped out + the partly visible Audi logo is gone too.

PS4 not 5 in 20" for the 718, per Jamie McWhir, technical manager Michelin UK.
He told me it's better than the SS it replaces (in generic sizes) in 99% of situations other than round a track (the other 1%). Also it's N marked, naturally.
SS will be retained in all current N, AO, MO, * etc sizes.

Yes you are of course right, I mixed the numbers up. Sounds like an excellent tyre.
I really hope the PS4 will come in a 19" with N0 approval to replace the PS2 on older cars like the 987.

Just to clarify guys, the picture is a photoshop doing the rounds from the actual show last year of the GT4 and GT3RS. It isn't from this year. The show this year includes the 718's and 911R, with rumours of the 991.2 GT3.

Yes, 19" PS4 N marked also due out later this year, but not sure what sizes.

The 20" PS4 is in the same sizes as 981. I'll be trying them but for now have had to go GY F1 A2 to keep my warranty intact. No bad thing, they were excellent on my TTS.

That's good news, so older cars are finally getting an N-approved closely related to the MPSS.

I suspected they would be available because the 718 configuratior lists 19" wheels as an option and the 3D model shows Michelin tyres. Sizes should be 235/35 and 265/35 ZR 19.

So, the 718 discussion has turned into a Michelin tyre discussion after 10 or so posts?

Is there anything we can discuss properly here any more?
