Hi all,

Just wondering whether anyone has a crystal ball and could tell me whether the 981 Boxster would still continue depreciating a lot?

I ask because:

- Some early (2012) Boxsters' are now hitting around the £30k region, which is getting fairly close to the 987.2
- Typical PH mentality, but the new 718 has a 4 pot turbo, so as the 981 has a 'better' engine, would it hold it's value more?

I'm tempted to buy an early 981 Boxster, but not too sure on how much more depreciation there would be once the 718s are hitting the streets...

I'm aware that it will continue depreciating no matter, but I just want to have an idea of how much more - hence it really is just a crystal ball moment

Any advice appreciated!

If you don't want a lot of depreciation then buy a Cayman r/gt4 or either version of the spyder.

If you want to buy a 981 for 30 grand. The older one will depreciate the least of all the 981s

I think they will continue to depreciate - dont think the majority of Boxster buyers care much about what engine it has (and no, I am not talking about boxster drivers frequenting pistonheads)

A nice 987. 2 S is still over £30k some are £35k so you can get a base model 981 less than a 987.2 car now.

You just need to buy what you like and not worry yourself over it, running costs will cost you the same again over how much it drops.

As for your question, "should I buy a 981"

Well "no". I would not I don't really like the larger platform, mr2 look and feel of them.

My guess is that anything outside of an R/Spyder/GT will circle the plug hole until they are worth £5 to £10k at about 12/14 years old?

Planning to keep my car for 10 years, expect it to reduce from £65k to £15k (fingers crossed!!), so £5k pa or the equivalent to c.£400 PCM, which seems a reasonable rental price for a car like these?

981's will hold their money like st to a blanket.

987.2 ŵere good but had a shot interior and were narrow for fatboys. The 981 was a massive step forward and two inches wider and were brilliant. The new car is st because I don't want a £70k Impreza.

Buy the cheapest 981 you can find and enjoy depreciation free motoring,

There is a reasonable chance that you are right.

A modest chance.

I would expect a 987.2 to be worth more than a 981 once both are properly old.

But it might not depreciate much over a year or two. It's not unheard of for mainstream Porsches to have a pretty gentle decline after the first few years.

Thanks for all of the input everyone. I definitely wasn't expecting it to be depreciation free, but I was hoping it wouldn't depreciate to around £25k any time soon...

You're all just tempting me to buy a 987.2 Spyder instead (can't afford the 981 spyder!), then again, I'd also be scared of putting any miles on it.

I've been debating whether to buy a 981 for over a year now. I might just buy one and accept whatever happens when I come to sell it in 1-3 years time...

Depreciation for 3 yr old 981 will be about 10% PA for the next few years and then will drop to about 7%. Set against that higher costs for repairs\renewals.
Get one with a Porsche Warranty an keep it in warranty and you will be onto a winner.

I have recently sold my 981 S and I it cost me price of a service to run it. that was buying it last June and selling it last month , im pretty confident the new keeper will be fairly safe in fact I think selling it on this year will actually make money.

I had a similar dilemma. Should I buy a 981 now or wait for the 718?

Got a good deal and after 4 happy weeks glad I did. Not really too concerned about resale, as I don't plan selling ........... any time soon.

If you can afford a 918, then do it. Much better than any Boxster.
