Hi All

Has anyone installed any additional sound deadening in a Cayman? Just looking to reduce tyre noise intrusion into the cabin a little.

Thanks.

James.

Changing the tyres will be more effective or, indeed, changing the rod surface you drive on. The road noise is transmitted through the suspension so additional sound matting has a (very) limited effect.........

My only experience is of a 981, but Goodyear Eagles are certainly better than Pirellis, and my Winter Dunlops are all but silent by comparison on coarse concrete.

Thanks. I don't find it unbearable by any means, but would still welcome a reduction. I'm on PS2's at the moment, looking at N rated options there doesn't seem to be much difference between tyres of the same size? The installer I'm chatting to at the moment achieved a reduction of 12-15 decibels at 75 mph and 15-25 decibel reduction at 35 mph on a GTR, which seems quite good.

Don't take much notice of the "official" figures - they are taken on smooth tarmac from the outside. As you say they only vary by a decibel or 2 which you'd barely notice. The difference on course concrete is vastly greater - I'd put it more like 10db between the Pirelli and the Winter Dunlops, even though on smooth surfaces they differ little.

Thanks for that. I was thinking of changing to the Goodyear Eagle F1's when the PS2's wear down. I think they're supposed to be quieter according to owner reviews. I have a feeling a full, proper, sound deadening job won't be cheap. As mentioned earlier though, just putting a bit of dynomat on the floor and boot won't make much of a difference. Needs liners etc etc to make a real difference. I've asked for a ballpark price and also weight addition anyway. We shall see.

I'd be interested to hear how you get on. I looked into adding soundproofing myself and found that the rear (where most of the noise seems to come from) was pretty well covered on the 981 and I couldn't see much mileage there. The exception was the wheel arches themselves (and probably explains why there is quite a din if you go over loose gravel). I'm tempted to cover them with waxoyl when I change to my summer tyres.

From what others have said the 987 may not be so well covered, so extra soundproofing may be a sensible route.

Just a side note, but have any of you experienced the resurfaced M25 just north of coming on from the A3? The thudding noise into my cabin is unbearable, I am hoping its just a temporary surface, the noise booms around the car I have to turn my music up to deafening levels to attempt to drown out some of the pain.

Road noise is the only bad thing about my 987.2 Cayman. Currently I have 19" Michelin PS2s and they are slightly quieter than the previous Pirellis. I also have a set of 17" wheels with Michelins and they are quieter than the 19s.

I think that you may be disappointed if you change your tyre brand just to decrease the road noise.

Hi All

A bit of an update. I'm going to use Refelctology (link below to the GTR work) for a compete bonnet to boot install. They've done my detailing and ceramic paint protection and I've been astounded with the work. Russell, the owner, is fastidious about detail and his work ethic and standards are exemplary. Hence why I'm confident he'll do a fantastic job and not a 'that will do' piece of work. He can't fit me in until 10th June due to other work booked in but I'll post some before and after readings and also some in progress photos.

Thanks.

James.
