Number Plate Transfer

Hi, apologies as i image its been covered a few times on here but how easy is to transfer a number plate ? and does it take long?

When I ought my new SH car, I had to wait for the v5 to come through in my name, then once I had the new v5, it was an instant transfer online from the old reg, to the new plate I had on retention.

I cold of had it all done before I had picked my car up but you still have to wait for the v5 to come through.

I believe if it's a new car they just register it on the new plate.

Yes it's easy, and now if you put one onto retention, they don't charge you a yearly admin fee of 25 GBP - there's just a one-off payment (which IIRC includes the transfer fee).

the thing I'm unsure about is that i'm not completed the purchase of the new car, therefore do i first put the registration on retention so that my old plate goes back on to the old car and then transfer once the purchase goes through or do i just transfer straight to the new car once complete ?

Are you selling the 'old' car?

If not, wait. If yes, then put the plate onto retention.

Yes I'm selling the car, well trading it in. therefore want to put the new plate on the car when i collect it in 10 days time. so what am i best to do? if i put it on retention and put the old plates on, will i get a V5 back in time to give to the trader ? I'm a bit confused what to do

You need to have the new v5 of the car you buy in your name before you can do the plate transfer. Once you have the v5 and retention cert it's instant.

So you have two options:

Sell car put private plate on retention
Buy new car
Wait for v5
Swap plates
Drive away

Or

Sell old car put plates on retention
Buy new car
Collect new car with its current plates
Wait for v5 to come through
Then swap plates after

I don't know where you're buying the car from but porsche sent through that info when I bought my car.
Once the v5 came through they made up and fitted new plates for free.

I did this recently when I sold my 911, transferring the plate directly onto another car (not owned by me) - just needed the certificate number off each v5 and job done for a one off fee. It is an instant process and you can then change the plates on your current car straight away - although you will need the updated V5 to do this (if you need to get new plates made, the assigned reg may well be the old reg so you may still have the original plates), which took 3 or 4 days to arrive.

If you do it about a week before you trade in then you will have the correct v5 for your car, and either transfer your plate straight onto car you are buying to have correct plates and v5 when you pick up, or put on retention depending what the seller would prefer.
