Hi chaps,

For the last couple of weeks I've had a rattling sound from the rear, seemed more noticeable at low revs for some reason, a very tinny sound. I think I've finally identified where it's coming from and have attached a pic. The bracket where the arrow is pointing to is very loose, however I'm not sure what this part is called or indeed what it's purpose is (in case I need it replaced)? Would anyone be able to shed any light as to whether this is a common problem and what this errr 'bit' is called? smile

Thanks!

Matt

Common problem is the heat shields above the cats with rusted bolts.

Thanks speedyman, not wanting to sound like the complete amateur (which I am) - but any chance you could help me locate those? I take it where my arrow is isn't these (so the rattling could be something else).

Had this with mine. As I moved the heat shield by hand, the bolt and retaining clip fell out and was very rusty. I didn't have a new one, so I've been running it without that bolt for the past few days.

I thought the noise would be worse... but it isn't, doesn't make a sound now it's fallen out!

I had this exactly the same (2000, 986, 2.7), recently actually posted even the sound, was scary-rattle in my small garage with an echo! Once we found the loose shields/bolts my garage checked everything else was in good order, I think it fell later on, no noise now.

I will replace the cats and muffler soon, 17 years none of them replaced and I can hear some more rattles when its cold by hitting with rubber rolleyes

Thanks guys, so to confirm - is the arrow pointing to the heat shield?

When the clamps on those heat shields rust away, the simple fix is to pinch the shield with pliers so that they grip the exhaust. No more rattles.
