It seems I have achieved my somewhat modest “dream garage” that is home to a 2008 Porsche Cayman 2.7 and a 2008 Ducati 848, both awesome machines that bring endless smiles per mile.

Here is my dilemma, I am racking up lots of miles on the Porsche (around 360 miles a week) it’s just ticked over 70k on the clock and I don’t want to be stuck with a 100k + gen 1 Cayman that’s hard to sell.
The Ducati gets dry weather use and the usual Sunday outing but with autumn just around the corner it is likely to be neglected under a cover on trickle charge for the winter season.

At a recent service visit to Porsche Mid Sussex, I found myself in another dream situation; having the keys to a 2016 Carrera 4s for the day.. and that’s when the seeds of doubt started to creep in. I know.. reality check! I was driving a fully spec’d £110k car for day so it was no surprise when I got back into my Cayman that I felt a little underwhelmed.

At 24 years old I feel pretty damn lucky to have both the 848 and the Cayman to choose from but there is something niggling at me now, I want a change. With 997 4s coming in at £35k with reasonable millage it’s tempting to sell both and get the 4s.

All I can say is be very sure as the Cayman 2.7 is a sweet steer.

Tried a 2.9 Cayman/Boxster ?

Just get a cheap snotter for the weekly miles and save the Cayman and 848 for the weekend. You will also appreciate the Porsche more when you don't drive it every day. Getting a second car for commuting really worked for me.

24 with a 996 C2 - 55 on the clock. Will be getting a daily drive (as others have suggested) and parking the C2 into a garage for those sunny dry days! Got to be the way to do it. Wouldn't go near a 997.1 without seriously looking at the engine and if any works been done.

Where are you in Sussex? Mid Sussex look after my 996, good bunch down there.

No, I appreciate my Porsche more when I DO drive it every day. I just don't get the "drive something worse every day" advice.
So, you're in your Astra and you see a Porsche. "I wish I was driving mine (sob)."

The more miles the more smiles!

I'm hoping to do 250,000 in mine, at least.

I sort of get the don't drive every day but if you enjoy it do it. What's a gen 1 caynan worth now, how much less with 100k? Are the smiles per mile worth it? As per the old analogy would you prefer to have sex with your girlfriend every day or just Sunday afternoons as its more special? Nope thought not hehe

Girlfriend every day, plus someone else's girlfriend on Sunday afternoons, often worked well for me :-)

I never get these comments, life's to short to drive a snotter and spend 85% in a st car.

I drive my porkers day on day why would you want to drive a snotter ?

I think it depends where you drive the snotter. I thought about a snotter as a "station car" but there are way better cars AM , Porsche etc in my station car park so may as well use the new disco. It's another car to tax and mot etc

Thanks for all your opinions.

Does anyone have any experience in taking a 2.7 over 100k in respect to part failure, things to change before they fail?

Unless you've got kids or need AWD it seems like a backwards step to me.

I agree with the 'don't get a snotter' sentiment. Then just decide what is more fun cayman daily+ducatti weekends or 911 every day. Simple.

Well, it's already 8 years old and 70,000 miles so it's not worth a great deal of money. £15k? You've already suffered the big depreciation and I can't see it becoming worthless at 10 years/100,000 miles. Plus you like driving it and there's the benefit of the devil you know...

Good for you.

Did you read the whole thing David? Because I enjoy my weekend car more when I don't use it everyday. Also, I prefer to drive my Audi diesel to work every day. The Porsche is just frustrating stuck on a busy motorway.

Same as me and i have tried both approaches a number of tomes. Grass is greener. I suspect your snotter isnt actually a snotter but a decent car.

I went the snotter route, a 55 plate diesel Golf GT. It serves it's purpose, the work commute, general duties, station car, trips to the tip, mountain bike in the back... my Cayman definitely feels more special on the days I drive it and those odd moments when people say ahhhh... I see why you have the Golf now always put a smile on my face. It works for me but I can see why others would just daily their Porsche.
I certainly don't feel like I'm driving a sh!t car... I'm very comfortable with myself in that way wink

A 55 plate golf isn't a snotter mate!!!
Lol... Well, I don't personally think it is but I'm sure the tolerance level would be pretty wide for what some of the Porsche owners here would consider acceptable as daily transport to sit along sit along side their weekender.
Obviously some will have the juice to run something(s) really nice during the week, others more hum drum stuff.
So what are you who do, running as a daily driver?

2014 981 Cayman 2.7 PDK as a DD. 15k miles a year. No issues in traffic jams due to PDK.

Just like being in it. Don't dislike the wife's A3 Tdi or her new X1, but I'd rather be in the Cayman.
