Hi guys this is my first post here. But this i have been getting really helpfully info of here for ages. So thought i would delve right in with my first question.

So here goes, I have a 2006 cayman s. And i have its running on 20 inch alloys that i upgraded to. There tyres that I took with the package foolishly were mid range and just don't cut it.

So i was looking at a few other option to give me better grip. These were the 2 they suggested

Michelin Pilot £200 ish

Pirelli P Zero and £120 ish on both prices,

The michelin are double the price from the pirellie. Now this is just for road driving no track, i don't push the car to crazy, but since i got the lower end tyres that came with the wheel package i just don't trust out quit the same in the bend's the same. its not got that slot car feeling you get with the cayman anymore.

Be great to know your thought's , is the price difference worth it it for someone just who want's to through the car about and enjoy it bit, but not serious racing

I will get the name of the tyres that are on it atm next time i am out in it , i have a terrible memory.

thanks in advance smile

I believe the N-Rated options for the 20's are:

P-Zero
Eagle F1's AS2's

The non rated options are:

MPSS

The P-Zero IMO is one of the worst tyres available, so I’ve replaced mine with MPSS.

Those prices are ................. seriously cheap. Must be fronts surely. Rears are expensive

Like most things in life, you get what you pay for with tyres. Michelin are about as good as it gets for road tyres. Goodyear Eagles are probably joint second along with Continentals, followed by Bridgestones and finally P Zero's. All imo opinion of course, but I have tried them all over the years. smile

As the OP has a 987 gen 1 running on aftermarket 20" alloys, the whole 'n' rated tyre thing is not a consideration.

My advice, get it back on OEM 19" alloys with N rated Michelins - that was the best tyre when I had 987's.

If cost and n rated tyres are an issue I wouldn't dismiss P zeros - but be sure to get the N1 version, it's a noticeably better tyre than the N0 version I suspect others have used.

Cost is not a massive issue its just i was wondering if they were really worth being double the cost really smile

Also on the 19's point, i have had this chat with a few people , but it had 19's on and it looked great, but superb with the 20 s, just a different car

Don't hate for saying this haha , but i suppose even if it didn't handle just quite as tight I was willing to give that up for how nice it looks, as its really an every day driver that i just want to have fun with when i feel like it, but want it to look the part as well

My 981s had Pirellis on, my GTS has Eagle F1s.

Of the two? Eagle F1 for me, just a bit more feel to it. Also, when I replaced the Pirellis they felt very loose for the first few hundred miles or so, really didn't trust them until bedded in. The F1s from new were good.

Out of interest, how long have people got out of a set of tyres on their base cayman 981? Debating between a 981 and a 718 and just curious as Ive managed to burn through a set of rear continental conti sport 5 in my Merc in 10,000 during the last year

I've currently at 12k miles on my first set of P Zero's on a 2.7 981 Cayman

I actually checked the rears last weekend and they still have at least 4-5mm of tread.

The mileage has been a mixture of motorway, general commuting and some enthusiastic driving, but no track use.

I'm slightly surprised by all the negativity about P Zeros and I've actually been very happy with them, although I must admit that the reviews generally place the Goodyear ahead of the Pirelli. Either way I'd rather those tyres than Bridgestones!

I agree. Bridgestones on my 987's were awful. My 981 20" came with Pzeros...I managed nearly 30K out of the original set. They grip well and offer pretty good performance in wet and dry conditions, so I replaced with the same. Michelins would be better I am sure, but there isn't a 'N' rated option for them and I have the extended warranty...so no can do!

I had PZeros (N0) on my 981. The fronts cracked in the grooves so Pirelli paid for a new pair but I bought GY F1 A2s instead, all round. I'd had these on my TTS and they were very good. TTS at 10k miles = 1mm of wear all round per the MOT at that point.

The Pirelli technician measured the PZero fronts at 50% wear after 19k miles.

On my 981 the Goodyears have travelled 7.5k miles later and they're at 7mm all round.

Wife's A3 has had GY F1 A2s for last 9k miles and 6mm left fronts, 7mm rears.

I'd go with these, but can't comment on them against the PZero (N1) or Michelins.
