Hi, can anyone tell me what trickle charge is required for a Cayman R? I don't understand if you need one that simply plugs straight into the cigarette lighter or whether you need one that goes direct to the battery? Am I correct in thinking that CTEK is the same as the Porsche ones?
If I do have to go straight to the battery how do I actually do this - I always thougt there were potential issues with disconnecting the battery to put the 'rings' on.
Any help or recommendations on which charger I need would be greatly appreciated and how to fit it.

I have a Ctek and think it is a great bit of kit.
I also have a similar device from Aldi or Lidl which worked fine on an old Volvo.

The cigar lighter needs to be live all the time if you are going to connect there. Ifit is switched with the ignition you can't really charge through it unless you are willing to leave the key in and ignition on.

If you have to connect to the battery it's pretty straight forward to remove the nut, slip the terminal ring on, and refit the nut without disconnecting anything.

Definately go for the Ctek - 5.0 is the sweet spot imo.

I got the Comfort Indicator with 8.0 terminals as well, presently 4.95 from Amazon, the cable is a bit longer than the one in the kit, and has the LED traffic lights to tell you how the battery is doing.

Snip the terminals rings on the cable to make them into a 'C', and then slip them behind the loosened nut. Feed the indicator up under the bonnet and out near the wipers. It can easily live here whilst you are driving and can be reached in the garage without lifting the bonnet when you want to plug it in.

You'll probably need the 2M extension as well for a tenner, then the Ctek can live on the garage wall.

That's how my R is connected and it works well.

Whether you plug it into the cigarette lighter socket or hard-wire it more permanently directly into the battery makes no difference provided that the cigarette lighter is "active" even when the car is turned off and then it comes down to convenience. I have a little snippet of wire attached to the battery poles and then there is a socket where you clip the charger on to when needed. On the Range Rover i have the whole C-Tek unit hardwired inside the boot so that the plug goes directly into the electrical socket.

Thanks for the replies, I shall order the 5.0 then from Amazon. wI'll check if I have a live feed or not but might just be easier to plug straight to the battery from the sounds of it. Nice couple of cars in that garage!

Exactly what I just bought with the 10mm connections on the direct connect connector. Thanks for asking the question as I have been dithering for a while!

Hi - what are the 10mm connections you refer to - so they not come with it on amazon?

I've normally found enough thread to fit another nut without having to disconnect the battery. The picture is the standard socket that comes with Ctek charger.

Just the size of the eyelets that connect at the battery as per the picture above. There are 6, 8 or 10mm ones on the lead I wanted with the LED indicators built in. You get a basic lead in the box that does the same without the LEDs but no idea of eyelet size. Might be a complete waste though! I'll let you know - it arrives tomorrow.

Glad it's not just me wondering!

Possibilities include,
  • Dr Frankenstein used to live there and would light himself up while running his smalls through the washing machine, or
  • Early Transporter Room equipment from the starship Enterprise, or
  • Rick Wakeman likes to pop round and jam on the Moog, or
  • Pirate radio station, or
  • Latest electronic ignition system for that Caterham 7....

Carrying on from my earlier post, I only needed the standard charger mxs 5 base unit and the extension cable. Everything else you need to have it permanently connected comes in the box. Just had to snip the eyelets to make them into a 'c' shape to slot over the positive terminal.
