Hi All,

Just picked myself up a Cayman R today and despite the soundtrack on the car being all I need for 90% of the time, some times i'll need a bit of music and I'm a bit confused with the old bluetooth. I can get the phone working fine, but there is no option for bluetooth music. I'd rather avoid the AUX as the sound quality won't be as good and buggering about with the phone whilst driving I'd rather avoid.

Am I missing something? I've tried going down the USB route but I still see no additional option to play music via that. Would it be a case I need to get an ipod to lightning converter (The car came with an ipod adapter).

Any help is much appreciated.

Cheers

Hamperman

I use the connector in the glove box which uses a USB link I think maybe with a 3mm jack plug as well. I'll have a look and report back.

Luke,

I have the Porsche Apple 30 pin connector in my centre console and purchased the official apple 30 pin to lightning connector. Its a daft short cable but it does at least work for having a high speed ipod connection. If you have an iphone 6 or larger, it doesn't fit under the arm rest either.
The phone connection works still via the Bluetooth audio seamlessly.
My only gripe is, the Porsche cable does not charge the phone frown

Thanks for the replies. I bought a cheap £4 30 pin to lightning adapter but didn't work! May have to try the official one but its 30quid...but of research shows tune2air could be a good shout and is about 70 quid so might go straight for that for the ease of it.

Has anyone used tune2air on the 987? Any recommendations?

Thanks
Luke

When I was researching Bluetooth streaming options I heard a lot of good things about the Tune2Air:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00B52LLJ6/

Doesn't seem to be available in the U.K. store at the moment. Seems to be the best option as it pretty much replicates the 981-type integration. Mine's a CD-30 so I went down a different route in the end but would definitely have got one if I had the upgraded unit and multimedia interface.

It tried something similar before the Apple lead in the shape of the Tunai Firefly Bluetooth adapter.
The product works but the problem is when you want to use the phone for calls.
This is because the phone is connected to bother the adapter and the OEM PCM via Bluetooth.

The audio can't decide which it wants to use for the phone call connection.
So basically I'd go with the apple adapter

I use my phone (windows) with the bluetooth for calls and talk texts and put my music on a USB stick. This might be old fashioned compared to having everything stored in one phone but it's hassle free and the music is always there in the USB port. Which is useful if I forget to take my phone with me....which is not always a bad thing!

I think I might give the official apple adapter a go then. Frayz, what pcm do you have? I only ask as I don't think mine has a connector in the center console.

Hi Frayz,

I picked up the adapter and it works well, although the connection to the Iphone is a bit fragile and disconnects - I also have to keep the arm rest up as as you say, it doesn't fit in the compartment.

I don't suppose you have a lighting extension cable or something? Apple don't do an official one and I've read mixed reviews on all the cables whereby many people say they get the "not an official product" error. If you have one that works, which one?

Failing that, I'll probably do the USB route which is just a bit of a pain having to update it all the time smile

Hey Luke,

I found you can close the arm rest without issue with the cable coming out and the phone rested on the passenger seat. It actually slots nicely into the slot in the seat (Carbon seats) where the crotch strap would come through. I haven't had any issues with it disconnecting at all and I haven't tried an extension.
With a bit of clever routing of the cable I can actually get the arm rest closed with the phone in, but its not practical so I genrally don't bother. Have you found the cable doesn't charge the phone either? Mine doesn't frown

If you try a cable, let me know how you get on.

Lads.

How long is the cable then - not very?
Will it tuck down the side of the passenger seat so the phone can slot under the climate panel?

I was going to go with that approach Stig but there is no official lightning extension so I don't think it's going to be possible. I assume you have the lightning adapter with 20mm cable Frayz?

I don't think the 987 comes with a USB in the glove box - unless I'm blind? I assume you have a 981 Joe?

Although has anyone tried a USB to lightning with the PCM 3?

Yes I tried a stock Apple lightning in the OEM USB port on the R and all it does is charge the phone.
Music won't play and obviously doesn't stream either.

Thought I'd come back on this as I swapped a Cayman with CDR-30 for a Cayman S with PCM 3.0. I bought one of the Bovee 1000 wireless adapters from Amazon (looks like they've changed the name from Tune2Air) which you plug into the y-cable. Once paired it shows up on the PCM as a regular iPod on the source list and replicates the functionality you get connecting an iPhone via a lightning to 30 pin adapter. When I get back in the car it either pairs immediately and starts playing or after a delay of a minute or so (which is the same when connected directly via cable). So you can browse playlists and what not on the Apple Music app and if you use Spotify (as I do) it lets you go back and forth between tracks (although doesn't let me search across Spotify playlists). The sound quality is to my ears no different to plugging in directly (although you have to max out the volume on the iPhone to get the best results) and only thing to note is the occasional fraction of a second sound dropout (but I get that on Bluetooth earphones too).

When a call comes in it automatically pauses the music and the call goes through the PCM as normal, then on ending the call the music carries on. Likewise dialling out switches seamlessly.

Pretty neat piece of kit and means my phone either lives in my pocket or in the cubby hole in front of the gear knob.

I went down the USB route in the end although I may swap to the bluetooth option if I get fed up of having to keep take the USB out to update my music smile

My CR has the iPod connector in the armrest, along with a USB port. The official Porsche cable has the old 30-pin Apple connector at one end, and both the round iPod and USB connectors at the other. Using an Apple lightning adapter, I can access music on an iPhone 6 via the PCM, and the phone charges. The only issue is that the Porsche cable is only about 20cm long, so have to balance the phone on the armrest or edge of seat.
