987 Cayman S as a first "sports car"
Discussion
They're great cars, lots more engagement and feedback compared to a TT, would recommend getting a Gen 2 to minimise any possible engine issues.
Also, I would go for manual for maximum involvement, though the PDK is also very impressive and allows for flexibility.
I would also go for a S over a base version but thats personal preference and lots will depend on what car you currently drive.

I looked at TTs, then drove a Cayman S. Didn't look at any more Audis after that. Cayman feels far more like a proper sports car. I had gen 1 S: either stop reading the internet and so avoid learning about what might go wrong, stump up for a gen2, or learn to live with niggly worry that you might get a big bill. I ended up trading for a gen 2 Boxster in order to be able to stop worrying!
I looked at Gen 2 987 in 2014 but too cramped for me to live with at 6' 1" tall so I bought a 2012 TTS.
...better to live with being cramped than with a TT!!!
981 solved all my space issues.
If you fit, go 987, but try to get a Gen 2 if you can afford it.

Thanks guys,
i have read for too much already about bore scoring issues but for some issues it dose'nt put me off haha. I'm just under 6 foot tall so space shouldn't be an issue.
Currently drive a 2015 Audi A1 as a daily and just sold my 1995 mini cooper that was a second car. So this really will be a big step up for me.

Gen2 Cayman big yes from me but don't discount a 2.9 although less power than a "S" it is still a hoot to drive but IMHO stick with manual, 18" wheels and the standard non pasm suspension everything else is personal choice.
Happy hunting and now over the winter period is a good time to buy for the best deals and IF you can find one in an OPC you will get the benefit of a 2 year warranty

Peter.....
When you say for some reasons it does not put you off.... Explain.
As a young man, the previous comments are there to protect you from folly.
Take the advice, get a gen2 what ever you do.
Good luck therefore with your gen2 car.
Buy a gen1 after this and you will get no sympathy from previous comments if it all goes pear shaped...

An original Mini, if set-up properly, is one of the best real-world driving experiences there is, so it won't be a 'big step up' from a petrolhead point of view.i have read for too much already about bore scoring issues but for some issues it dose'nt put me off haha. This is something that seems to get lost these days - on the public road, you are much more able to have fun (without endangering yourself or more importantly others) in a quality older car with good dynamics but less grip/power.
In a Cayman on the public road to get anywhere near the fun-factor of the Mini you will have to be going significantly 'faster'.
At 24, if you have that attitude, you'll need some luck..... Good luck!

Morning Peter
When i was first looking for a Cayman in my head it had to be the S but after a lot of reading i couldn't risk it with the bore score issue (wasn't brave enough!)
I opted for a 2.7 and a great car it is.
Now we get more to your point.
We recently bought my wife a tt the 3.2 v6 version.
She also has a Corsa that she uses as a daily so i can choose what to drive.
To be honest i would love to say the Cayman is a better drive, faster and more fun but for me it boils down to what the weather is doing, the TT is a convertible and i enjoy driving that with the roof down as much as i do the Cayman!
They are both great cars and if i had to choose one i guess i would go for the Cayman but in the back of my mind i am wondering if a 3.4 boxster may be the ideal car for me?
Have fun trying out both cars, if you can ignore the bore score issues go for the S and best of luck

It simply is not sensible for a 24 year old who has a limit to spend to take a risk that could cost him £10,000........
Why on earth would you advise anyone to take a chance like that.
Just so you know Peter!!!????????????
There are several companies in the country that spend all their time rebuilding Porsche engines, thats all they do, are you listening.
Having searched myself for a cayman and had the cars bore score tested, it will be 50/50 at best if you get bore scoring.
Also found a 911, 997 that had a brand new engine fitted at 25k miles. It had covered 20k on the brand new engine so I asked for it to be bore tested. The dealer rang me back and had to tell me the bad news. One cylinder was badly scored, and he said obviuosly you are not going to buy the car now are you!
This disgraceful situation has never been admitted to by Porsche, but some main dealers will not sell gen1s and some will at their risk give you a warrenty for a gen1 which will be the best way to go if you can find one.
There are a heap of disgruntled ex porsche owners who got burned.
Some people on here think the problem wasn't that bad. ???
The truth is, if this was only small numbers porsche would have rebuilt the engines with good will. That never happened.
Just as a final pointer for you.... Why do you think the 997 I had looked at was put up for sale..... I wonder.

I don't understand this. I'm 6 ft 2 and have zero issues with space in my Cayman. It's far more spacious than my V6 TT!!...better to live with being cramped than with a TT!!!

I opted for the 2.7 987 Cayman. After driving both I thought the 2.7 was more fun to drive on the road and cheaper insurance (I am also 24 and this is a big plus).
I have a few friends who got the Audi TT and honestly they are not even in the same league in terms of sports car handling and looks.
on a side note what sounds better - "I'm 24 and I drive a Audi" or "I'm 24 and I drive a Porsche".. its a no brainer. Luckily 99% of girls don't know the difference between a £100k 911 and a £14k Cayman
