987 or 981 Boxster ??
Discussion
I have a budget of 25-30K and am interested in buying a Boxster PDK; the 2.9 or 2.7 would be quite enough for me, and I'm not bothered about whizzbang infotainment connectivity options. The price range that I'm in now brings lower specc'd 981's into the frame, as well as late Gen2 987's, so my question is..... should I go the extra mile to secure a 981, or would a 987 with extra goodies (i.e. sports exhaust, climate control etc.) be as good a bet?
Thanks.
Thanks.

981 if you want PDK ......
Thank you all for your replies. I note that there are 2 recommendations for the 981 PDK over the 987 equivalent and, as I have problems with my left leg and therefore favour an auto, I'd be grateful if you could try to describe how the 981 version is better please. I understand that there are updates to the systems with each new model, so I'm wondering how the PDK in the 981 was improved.
Thanks again.

It's just night and day better, faster, no lag etc etc a step on, mainly on the downshifts.
Upshifts have always been goon on PDK.
Absolutely! We had a 987/2 Cayman S PDK and a 997/2 Carrera S PDK prior to our current 981 Boxster GTS. The transmission in the GTS is chalk and cheese different, both much faster and smoother but also more intuitive in auto.Upshifts have always been goon on PDK.
The same applies to the choice of 987 or 981, the newer car is a quantum leap better in every single way (apart from the cars mentioned previously we also owned two 987/1 Boxster S, great cars in their own right but not as modern or as thoroughly developed as 981). Much is spoken about the electric steering but to be honest the difference is not that great that it makes much difference 95% of the time.

All that is subjective as the steering is what I love about my R and that makes the car amazing.
Better in every way is misleading.
I say my GT4 is better in every way than my R bar enjoyment :-) lol
But where tech counts ie PDK the gen 2 PDK is far far better esp down shifts and in auto mode.
I still say if you love driving and I mean really love it, the 987.2 manual is a great tool and while not a better car as you put it, far more involving and enjoyable, you just feel more part of the car than a 981.
If you want to go PDK then 981 all the way as I stated is the better/right choice imo.
90% of buyers will like the 981 better I would say, but I am in the 10% the other way.

I'm just about to sell my BS 987.1 with a view to buying a BS 987.2 which I plan on modding over time.
I've got a 981 Spyder so the 981 option is covered off for me :-)
As I've yet to have the pleasure of driving a .2, can anyone tell me the main advantages of the newer model (obviously the engine is a far safer bet !)
cheers

I'm afraid you and I fail to agree on almost all the above! PDK is better, PASM is better, ride is better., build quality is better, performance is better, fuel economy is better.... it's simply a far superior sports car.
The fact is 987 is a very thorough facelift of 986, a car designed when Porsche was virtually bankrupt, a brilliant car of its day that saved Porsche. 981 is an all new design from the ground up, developed by a very wealthy and successful company that could throw the sort of resources at it's development that would have been barely imaginable back when 986 was on the drawing board.

I bought a TTS over a 987, but that's the effect the latter had when I drove several in 2014... I umm'ed and ahh'ed.
First test drive of a 981 PDK and there was no doubt whatsoever. So, 2010 987.2 lost to a 2012 TTS. TTS lost to a 981.
To be fair, the majority of my reasons for rejecting the 987 were old fashioned interior and tech, and that I didn't really fit. (6' 1")
Agreed dreamcar.
Having test driven 911s 997 996....
Cayman gen1 and gen2 and then a 981.... The 981 cayman was a massive leap.
I did really like the 997 but the 981 is so refined over all the previous.
I think that some people miss out the refinement side of the argument as if it doesn't matter, it really does matter when assessing how well a car drives.
With 19'wheels the gen2 cayman although engaging to drive, is uncomfortable on poor roads, where as the 981 even in standard form has an amazing ability to smooth out the surface.
The electric steering is beautifully controlled through to the wheels and the car in general is much better planted on the road than previous models.
The thing is really about individual taste of course, but don't discount the refinement aspect of a car, or disrespect the achievement that Porsche created when they built the 981.....it really is a great car of its day.
Its just a great shame that the tree huggers scuppered one of the great cars.

PISTONHEADS NEWS SHOCKERS!!!!
1. cmoose defends his shonky old underwheeled 987 against any 981 'cos it's all about the 'feel' innit....'
2. Demon slags off anything that isn't a gay-yellow GT4 (**that'll cost him 10k off his overs) whilst constantly reminding all and sundry that he also has a Cayman R and that it is the single best car ever built by anyone anywhere EVER! And that all other Porsches are s

Driving is not about tech.
If you read my post, I state if you want tech buy the 981 if you REALLY love driving buy the 987.2
If you drove both you would know which one you wanted.
Complete nonsense I'm afraid. If you re read my post you'll learn that I owned THREE 987's including a 987/2 Cayman S so I think that qualifies me for having sufficient experience to know what I'm talking about, though I don't pretend to be Lewis Hamilton I believe I am a keen enough driver to know which is best - and it most definitely isn't a 987.If you read my post, I state if you want tech buy the 981 if you REALLY love driving buy the 987.2

I don't think anyone buys a Porsche for the latest technology, only 718 gets close in this regard. Thorough development to which I referred is not just about technology.
You indicate that because I don't happen to agree with you I don't know what I'm talking about which portrays you as somewhat arrogant.

"know which is best " is subjective again like myself and Cmoose posted.
I posted "If you drove both you would know which one you wanted" also saying 90% people would go 981 !
Why are people on forums getting aggressive ?

You forgot the dreamers and t*ss*rs on the other posts especially the 12 for sale post!Back on topic I have owned or driven all models of caysters and have to agree with both cmoose and mrD on this subject !
A manual 987.2 is a sweet car and as for a 981 being better in every way is nonsense apart from the pdk the only 981 to get me out a 987.2 was a gt4 even then if my 987 spyder had same engine / brakes as the 4 it would have been the better car!
