I have the standard 981 cayman with halogen headlights.
Its the only thing on the car that annoys me due to the dull dipped beam.
The full beam seems ok.
Has anyone taken the updated bulbs route to improove the dipp beam lighting.

Thanks

Not on a 981 but I did on my last 987 Gen2, used whatever the latest tests e.g. Autoexpress recommended and whilst you wont see a huge improvement for a few quid its better than doing nothing so worth trying

Out of Porsche warranty?

I think mine are rather good. No complaints about dipped or high beam.
BUT, if there's a way of making them better without upsetting CAN BUS (whoever he is) then let the search begin!

Yes, out of warranty....
Mine is 2014.... With option 3rd year at the time of purchase.
Obviously, previous owner only kept it for two years so did not take the option £££££££££ third year.
I have an 2 year warrenty from the dealership I bought it from which was not main dealer.
Anyway I suspect that they will not pay out for me just to upgrade my halogen dip beam lights.
Main beam is good. Just poor on dip beam.

There is quite a lot on this on the american forum for the 981.
I am sure someone will come along in a minuet who has done it.

Hmmm... Mine is a May 2014 car. Owned by Porsche Reading to Dec 2014 when bought by its first real owner as a Porsche Approved used car. I was therefore sure it had a two year used warranty to Dec 2016, but when I asked my OPC recently they said the warranty runs until May 2017, i.e. 3 years from new. When I queried this, saying surely it's just 2 years from new, the salesman who was looking at their system said, no, they all have 3 years now (now being from 2014 I assumed).

I'm not arguing, but I'm still a little in the dark about how the new/used/extra year thing works, or worked?

However, when I had a trim rattle a few weeks ago, my OPC did say trim squeaks/rattles weren't covered in the third year.

Thanks for that DJMC....
The dealer I bought mine from said they had contacted Porsche who explained the way the warrenty worked?
Porsche told them that my car had not taken the option of the third year.
This is confusing to all people.
I believe the three year warrenty has now been restored without it being an option to be paid for?
Interesting.

You do pay for it - its just been added to the base price to stop people opting out of buying the 3rd year warranty.

Also regarding the 981 bulb upgrade, there was a thread on Boxa.net on that a short while ago.

This from my OPC dealer principal this morning:

"The 3 year warranty comprises of 2 years from the manufacturer and the 3rd year from Porsche GB the importer, this is quite a new thing that Porsche GB decided to do as most other manufactures offer it.

Both of these warranties that form the 3 years cover have sliding scales of cover, for instance rattles are only covered by the 1st years cover and then only for 3 months, as you get into the 3rd year of cover it is basically like an approved used warranty covering electrics, drivetrain, transmission and ancillary electrical and mechanical parts but not trim for example.

I hope that this makes some sense and I will see if there is any literature that I can send on to explain it better."

5p regarding lights. I opted adaptive xenon when ordering my Cayman and still not very happy with dipped beam - it lights too low to my taste and thus too short range for cars speed potential.

I have other cars in use, some with xenon and some without and noticed that xenon headlamps generally gives too low beam giving shorter range than halogen. And the problem is you can't adjust xenon manually to rise the beam at least a little.

Thus it forces to use high beam very often, though on a car without xenon I did not use high beam on the same roads for years.

Right, concerning the low beam after reading the manual, I will see if I can adjust the low beam level up a fraction which may improove the view.
Obviously taking into account them being not to high.
If that fails to add some more clarity to low beam I will move on to improoved legal extra bright H7 bulbs suitable for the 981 cayman.
I will also contact my local Porsche main dealer at Harston Cambridge to ask for details on the warrenty.
Cheers

I put aftermarket HIDs on mine, cost £80 and due to the projector housing the beam pattern was spit on. reconended and if u don't like, easy enough to change back

I thought aftermarket HIDs were illegal as the standard headlights do not have washers and are not self-levelling.

Smoking pot and cycling on the pavement are also illegal. Not sure anyone ever does anything to prevent it happening.

Not a Porsche owner, but I have had cars with Halogens, HIDs and Xenons. Generally Halogens are terrible, HIDs are much better (but essentially illegal though my car always got through it's MOT) and Xenons are another level again. I wouldn't bother with upgraded bulbs, the difference between Halogen and Xenon is massive - I would either fork out for Xenons if an upgrade is possible or stick with the halogens. I can't see upgraded bulbs coming close to bridging the gap between Halogens and Xenons.

they're not illegal, they are technically an mot fail if the beam pattern isn't right but as they sit within a projector the beam pattern is shaped by the projector. it's only a requirement to have self leveli g and washer vuilt in on original equipment. I had HID kits for years and had no issues with mot and I've never heard of it being an issue for anyone too. just don't go for 14k purple ones

Briefly back to the porsche warrenty......

Went into Porsche at Harston, cambs.
I just nipped in to get a touch up for the car.

I said I have a July 2014 cayman, what warrenty have I got left.
He said there is a simple answer for this question for which the computer will tell me. He inputted my VIN number and my car had a two year warrenty from new, with an option to pay for the third year which was not taken up.

I questioned this saying that someone on Pistonheads had appeared to have secured a third year for nothing? On a sale.

Apparently there is no backdating on a older model, so if it wasn't payed for you ain't going to get it unless it part part of the sale of a secondhand car at a dealer.
So, all new cars now get three years, end of story.
Previous models will get two years, and three only if the option was taken up.

Gadgit.

Was the car UK sourced? I thought the 3rd year was compulsory for UK cars.

I bought a Macan in 2014 and opted out of paying for the 3rd year warranty.

Since then they just added the cost of the 3rd year to the base price.
