I was cruising along on Saturday night when all of a sudden my exhaust note changed dramatically from normal Cayman sports exhaust sound to boy racer in a supped up nova. I initially thought the back box was damaged so I pulled over and checked it over and was all fine no holes ect. I replaced the exhaust clamps 2 weeks ago as the old ones were corroded and rattling, this was all solid and secure still.

I don't have the facility's to get it up on a ramp so cant see for sure but I suspect one of the exhaust gaskets has broken. Has anyone had any dealings with this before?

I've booked it in at Mid Sussex and they couldn't give me a estimate price until they have had a look so was hoping to get a ball park figure from someone on here.

Check the three studs / bolts on the triangular mounts which joint the front and rear sections of the exhaust.

They have a habit of corroding away allowing the gaskets spring a major leak, for me it resulted in the Nova sound you speak of!

A good garage should be able to replace the old studs / bolts, not expensive.

Just been through all this with mine. I had several bolts that had disintegrated but couldnt locate a blow so assumed it was the backbox. When we removed the old exhaust we found a small section on the header flange had corroded and I we think it was just passing through a 4mm section. Obviously coming straight off the header it sounded far worse than it was.

That was my first thought. The corroded bolts in that location on both sides of my car all disintegrated during acceleration.

I paid just under £260 to have new bolts/gaskets on both sides at a local Porsche indie. I was lucky in that the manifold bolts were not seized and therefore did not break which would have cost a lot more to put right.
