Newbie , Boxster Spyder or Cayman R 987
Discussion
Hi all ,
About to enter the Porsche ownership realm, but can't decide between the Spyder , I know the roof looks like a real bind but like the quirky or do I go the Cayman R ?
Haven't driven ether as yet but I will .........would like to hear from you owners and your thoughts .
Regards Paul.

Wow ... very nice too , my purchase would be only for a weekend and sunny day fun car , run a Ferrari 360 at the moment and want something that I don't get over precious with as I am finding with the 360 , been told the PDK in the R is awesome but it's a manual in the Spyder that is a must have , is that right ? Manual for both really for any sort of resale, and fun :-)
The 981 GTS platform is better if you want PDK imo.
EVO did a Spyder vs 360
you will get precious with a 987 Spyder in the end , there are only about 100 manual cars in the UK and prices are on the up, £50k really for one with the must haves and the lower end of the miles on the clock.
I am sure these will boom at some point, last of the cars with hydraulic steering with no PTV, PASM etc etc.
But for that sunny day car then get a Spyder, it's great.
they also did a track batter Spyder vs R8 which is good viewing

OTTyinsky if you had to choose between the 993 or Spyder as a third car for weekend use which would it be?
I appreciate we're not comparing applies with apples however both are a bit special in their own way.
Thanks
Sorry OP.
yes. but the drop top is more like a bikini top. IE it is simply a thin piece of weather protection. You get NO sound proofing what so ever when it is up.
That makes for a very hard core environment especially if you intend to use the car a lot.
I think great as a 3rd car.........
I would get one with no AC and no Stereo.... but not a Porsche experience or fleet car. Tough pickings.

If you can live with the drop top then Sypder any day of the week. It is a truly special model in its own right. The R - alghouth a great drive - is just a tweaked Cayman S.
every cars a tweaked some thing lol, GT4, 981 Spyder etc etc the 987 is a tweaked Boxster ! the R has more tweaks than the Spyder in fact Hi Paul
I have been in a similar dilemma, I had a Ferrari 360 red coupe with manual box about 4 and half years when I had a yearning for a soft top to go alongside it.
After a brief flirt with the idea of a Lotus 340R (always loved them) i decided on a Boxster Spyder and picked it up as a private sale on New Year's Day 2016.
I just love it, it's far more usable as well as just being a fizzing bundle of fun and I drove it much more than the Ferrari and ended up selling the Ferrari end of summer just gone. The days I would use either of them were pretty much the same, dry, sunny with the need for only myself or just one passenger.
I did think of selling both and buying a Mac 12c but just can't think about passing up on the joys the Spyder delivers..... I may go for a 540/ 570 one day if I get distracted or can afford both.
Good luck
Ed

Many thanks. You're cars do look fantastic. Had my 993 almost 5 years now and I know I couldn't part with it....I know for a fact I'd miss the smell and sound and feeling of driving an AC 911...however I loved my Boxster S and can imagine how good the Spyder is. As you say on the right day the Boxster is quite something. I might need to compromise and buy another Boxster and run it alongside the 993. Actually also been considering an SC Elise as an alternative too.

You are selling it to me Ed , like the idea of an open top for the ever hopeful sunny days I have been in a similar dilemma, I had a Ferrari 360 red coupe with manual box about 4 and half years when I had a yearning for a soft top to go alongside it.
