Bearing-y sound 987
Discussion
My Croc is in for a service shortly, something I've identified is a rumble from the front of the engine that sounds distinctly like a bearing on the way out. Short of taking the access panel off & having a poke around, anyone else had this? I'm hoping it's the alternator pulley for pennies but does a failing water pump give similar?
Car runs fine, no overheating or electrical gremlins, just this revs related rumble.

...Which I wish I'd done sooner. 100 mile trip yesterday, pulled up at the destination & the car started screeching, smoke pouring out of the side duct, coolant dripping on the deck. Looks like the pump's seized & the belt was burning, rotating around the seized pulley.
On top of that, it;s due an MoT tomorrow, so I've ended up having to borrow a car to get home & I now have to travel back to repair it & get it MOT'd all at once to legally bring it home.

I don't visit this site as often as I used to. Busy with work. But had I spotted your first post I would have urged you with the noise you should have had it looked into pronto. One should not let a suspected bad water pump go.
My Boxster developed a low pitched grumbly/rumbly noise at cold engine start.
I removed the engine access panel behind the seats and removed the belt and found the water pump with a bit of play. Not much but more than the other accessory drives. The belt -- just a few months old too -- had a sharp edge a sign the belt was not tracking right and rubbing. Rather than risk driving the car I had it flat bedded 25 miles to the nearest dealer and had the water pump/T-stat replaced.
More recently, a few years ago, when I caught the odor of anti-freeze from my 996 Turbo I drove the car right over to the dealer -- just up the street from where I was -- and the tech got the car in the air and spotted leak sign around the water pump. I arranged to get a ride home and left the Turbo to get a new water pump and T-stat.
My point is if one suspects a water pump is bad and a noisy or leaking pump *is* bad not just going bad to get it taken care of ASAP.
