My L/R lights do not work . The centre light operates fine. I have changed the bulbs for the correct type Osram and checked the fuses . Is there a control box that has anything to do with the braking electrical system in the rear ?
Thanks#

Don't think so. I've found the lights can be quite sensitive to bulb types & it's easy to mis locate them in their sockets. Best thing is to undo one side - three nuts & unclip the bulb tree from the light unit & try them in situ in the boot.

I have tried this although the cluster comes out via clips without removing the whole thing. If 1 Bulb isnt connecting is it likelty to through both out ?

I don't think so. I'd try new bulbs Osram 7225 LLF, offset pins or equivalent I think - would be worth checking the manual as I might be wrong there.

Definitely check the correct bulb fitment; listed in the handbook. After fitting if they still don't work try a battery disconnect/reconnect as the front/rear ECU's can get a bit confused.

When did they stop working? After a single bulb replacement or during an upgrade? (fitting LED bulbs?)

I have had it where a stored fault locks out the ECU and clearing the fault is the only way to reactivate the lights

They won't be wired in some form of series, that would kill both at the same time when one goes & motor manufacturers would have thought about that at the design stage. Bulbs, fuse, someone who knows what they're doing, in that order.

Not sure this will help as the centre light works fine and it must be on the same circuit?

Rear lights are controlled by the rear end electronics ECU - the left right and centre are fed by 3x different circuits from the ECU - This allows fault diagnosis (hi level brake light faulty / left brake light faulty/ right brake light faulty).

Make sure the correct bulbs are fitted - Not just that the same type are fitted as removed - could have been incorrectly installed before but not necessarily triggered an issue - seen before like this.

If it were me I would remove the -ve battery terminal and both light units, check all the bulbs - type / location and fitment against the owners manual bulb table and replace any if necessary, refit the -ve battery terminal and recheck.

Also worth checking; the REE CU is under the passenger seat - make sure the carpet is dry behind/under the seat (just in case).......

Ok so I checked the carpets under the passenger seat and all dry . Disconnected the - battery terminal and reconnected it , no change . The rear spoiler switch still operates the spoiler so a bit confused . I guess it's a trip to a dealer with diagnostics :-/

Not on my 987, but with my e39 BMW the pins connecting to the bulb tarnished over time and needed bending back. Its been a while since I changed a bumb in my 987 (now I've jinxed it!) but if the pins aren't making proper connection then that might be the issue.

Otherwise do you have access to a multimeter? Might be worth checking that power is getting to the bulb if you know the bulb is fine?

One of the brake lights on my 987 failed, turned out to be tarnished contacts on bulb holder. Quick clean all ok.
For future reference, the fog/tail bulb is the same type as the stop/tail so can be swapped over if required
