I've read the new 718 has slightly wider rear wheels than the 981. When you look at one with the 20 inch wheels it is obvious. The rear tyre looks quite stretched. This one I spotted today has lots of damage to the outer rims and you can see no protection from the tyres.

Regarding width, it depends which wheels you choose:

  • Carrera Classic and Carrera S: 8J and 10J
  • Carrera Sport and Turbo: 8.5J and 10.5J
All use a 265 profile rear so it's a bit too stretched on the 10.5J rears.

Those in the pic are Turbo right?

Funnily enough ( actually not funny ) I curbed my turbos first day getting out of my multi car park . Exit especially is very narrow and curved in two places ( crazy) and has signs up saying make sure your car is lined up etc....not had a problem before but had smaller car with smaller wheel base and caught the rear driver wheel ...very annoyed and upset blub 😩

I have to say that I am surprised that the extra risk of kerbing due to the lower profile tyres and wider rims, and extra cost of repairing diamond cut rims, doesn't dissuade more people from choosing big wheels.

I am going through this dilemma now with my 981. I have 20 inch summers and 19 inch winters. I need new summer tyres. I am tempted to just buy 19 inch summer tyres and use the winter rims.

Did the passenger rear yesterday ...worse than driver rear
It's a tight bend to exit my car park ( multi with ludicrous exit)
Thing is it's a small block of flats really with at least two other cars living there ...0ne Cayman two boxters and I will have to see if their rims are ruined
I have park assist and camera and when I exit I'm so worried about the front as its narrow exit plus scaffolding round it as doing building work next door solo old even smaller exit and I don't look at screen enough or turn too soon worrying about bonnet
Anyway getting paranoid now !!! It's only the rim not the face luckily but I'm worried. Car is maybe 10 cm wider than my old Clio and I've never damaged the rims in 8 years and gone out this exit at least 1000 times !!

in an ideal world Porsche would offer 19 inch versions of their 20 inch rims.

the Carrera S 20's are great but i think i would love the same wheel in 19" even more.

Slightly off topic but has anyone had any problems with stones flying up from the wider 20" Carrera Sport or Turbo wheels and chipping the paintwork on the rear sills or intake grills? I've read about a 718 CS owner that has had to fit Xpel film on these areas and already had to touch up his painted intake grills.

I've spec'd 20" Carrera Sports but this and the potential kerbing puts me off slightly, although, touch wood, it has been a good few years since I've kerbed a wheel!!

The 20" are no wider than 18 or 19 so there should be no difference at all on amount of stones thrown up from the front tyres. But yes the side intake area in front of the rear tyres is vulnerable to chips from stones from the front wheels and other than putting ppf on there is little you can do about it. Chips on the front bumper and bonnet you can mitigate to some degree by not driving close to cars in front.

981 with 20" Carrera S and 265 35 20 GY F1 A2s. No curbing issues. Great tyres!...

Hmmm... a few weeds to deal with too!

I have similar, tyres stick out from rims plus rear camera helps a lot when parking. Do have to think before taking car out if there is suitable parking, never had to do that before.............but hey now a Cayman owner & smiling a lot every time car is taken out.spinspin
